In Praise of Risk | Anne Dufourmantelle

Pickpick

I'm back!!!

This French philosopher of risk (and more! But first...) died in a way that has become quite iconic, or mythic (both ambivalent terms and outlooks), by simply drowning by rushing into the water to save two children in deathly danger.....the two survived...she did not
This book is available on a free per chapter download basis (or was)
If this does sound interesting to anyone. Hmu and I will link you (assuming the site is still hosting

There are so many books I'm going to be reading over the next 5 days as I try and quit smoking cold turkey... A book about jazz, several Dedalus books of decadence, poetry, and this one I heard about in the Boston Review... Wish me luck! I'm certainly going to need it!

Chelleo Good luck! 🍀 6y
teafetish @Chelleo I was waiting for anyone else to say thank you, but I'm new here so, 😎 thanks! 6y

The Ballad of Black Tom | Victor LaValle

Mehso-so

Worth a read, as it's short, and I would definitely recommend READING the book, as opposed to the audiobook, but, as I've said, that might just be a matter of taste...the author has said he was inspired to write this rather gory story after reading Lovecraft and finding no black character...worth checking out if you're a fan of horror or stuff about giant sleeping gods at the bottom of the sea..

Been listening to this short novella, based on Lovecraft mythos, not bad but the reader is kind of annoying but that's maybe just my taste

We'll add a review later today

This is purely, perfectly lynchian, ominous as heck, and a tug on maternal instinct I'm sure...if you like your reading dark, with abundant dream logic, and full of slowly creeping menace, this is most def worth your time

This is my first review of a personal favorite...while long, no part of the book feels extraneous, as the two magicians spar, verbally at first, and then-but I've already said too much haven't I? What makes this a winner in my book is the Dickens/Austen savor to the writing, the rounded characters, and the wonderful proceedings which start on the first page and won't let up till the last (which contains a nice double take in the final line).gold!
