The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington
The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington | Leonora Carrington
15 posts | 9 read | 3 reading | 19 to read
Fiction. Surrealist writer and painter Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) was a master of the macabre, of gorgeous tableaus, biting satire, roguish comedy, and brilliant, effortless flights of the imagination. Nowhere are these qualities more ingeniously brought together than in the works of short fiction she wrote throughout her life. Published to coincide with the centennial of her birth, THE COMPLETE STORIES OF LEONORA CARRINGTON collects for the first time all of her stories, including several never before seen in print. With a startling range of styles, subjects, and even languages (several of the stories are translated from French or Spanish), THE COMPLETE STORIES captures the genius and irrepressible spirit of an amazing artist's life.

kspenmoll Gorgeous cover! Excuse my total ignorance- who is she? 🤦‍♀️ 3y
LeahBergen Cool! 👍 3y
Suet624 @kspenmoll our bookclub recently read the Hearing Trumpet, a phantasmagoric book. 🤣🤣Carrington was a famous surrealist painter among other things. I have proceeded to find anything I can of hers to read or to read about her. here is a link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonora_Carrington 3y

I picked this book up during a visit to Asheville. It‘s very strange and very much my type of book. I‘d never heard of Carrington before, and I feel like I should have.

vivastory She's one of my favorite artists 5y
m.galehuxley @vivastory Her work is fascinating! I haven‘t spent much time looking at her paintings yet, but from what I‘ve seen, the atmosphere is similar to her written work. (edited) 5y

Today‘s staff pick is 'The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington,' selected by Rare Book Room manager, Jane. "Talking animals, witches, murder, debutantes, bestiality. One of these subjects alone is enough for a novel but you will find all these things in Leonora Carrington's absurd and sometimes hilarious surrealist stories. Check it out if you want strange dreams." Find it on our Small Press table! #staffpickfriday

saresmoore Fun! I just bought this as a staff pick from Malaprop‘s in Asheville, NC! 6y

Due to extenuating circumstances, I made the executive decision to lift my self-imposed book buying ban. I made it five months! This was my selection from Malaprop‘s—I REALLY had to narrow it down, but I‘m happy about all of them. Now excuse me while I read & write my way through the rain!

TrishB Well done on even getting to 5 months 👍🏻 these look beautiful 💕 6y

erzascarletbookgasm Bravo for 5 months! I have Madam Bovary to read for Litsy classics, but my edition is not as pretty as yours. 😊 6y
dylanisreading 5 months! That's awesome. I've been wanting to read Madame Bovary forever, and that looks like a pretty edition. 6y

emilyhaldi Wow 5 months is impressive!!! 🙌🏻 (edited) 6y
Lindy What a beautiful selection of books! 😍 6y
saresmoore @batsy Oh, I‘m not sure what edition it is—I‘ll have to check! I was drawn to the cover and the “Staff Pick” description recommended it for people who like weird, weird fiction. It was a no-brainer! 6y
saresmoore @erzascarletbookgasm @Bianca This beautiful cover was $6, new! The Wordsworth Classics editions are usually early translations, priced very affordably. (edited) 6y
saresmoore @Leftcoastzen I‘m looking forward to it! 6y
Suet624 If there were ever an occasion to break the ban, this would be it. 6y
Moray_Reads Totally justified! 6y
saresmoore @Suet624 That was my thought, too. My budget disagreed, but my determination won in the end. 😬 6y
LeahBergen Yesssssss! I‘m so glad you treated yourself at this stressful time! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
Notafraidofwords Hi. Hoping you still have electricity and okay ❤️ 6y
vivastory I love Leonora Carrington. Both her prose & her paintings. If you dig her art, I definitely recommend her fellow surrealists Dorothea Tanning & Remedios Varo. 6y
vivastory Also, 5 months?! Color me impressed! 6y

#ReadingResolutions Day 2: My #ThreeStack from BookDep that I wish to get into, like, now?? Our house is starting to look less like a warehouse - more like a home slowly each day - but my books are still in the process of being shelved, which takes up practically all my waking hours - so, apologies Litsy tribe if I haven‘t been commenting or responding to your posts lately. Barely have time to breathe.

batsy What a great selection of books 😍 6y

#QuotsyFeb18: Day 19 - #Dawn is my favourite time of the day, if I get to wake up for it, that is. I super love my sleep too much. I have been meaning to read Leonora Carrington for awhile now - anyone who has read her stories yet? How‘d you find her?

In addition to being a short story writer, Leonora Carrington was a surrealist painter. So her stories are like if you took a Salvador Dali painting and tried to make sense of the weirdness.

They‘re like strange, delightful, disturbing fairy tales. It‘s hard to describe, so you‘ll just have to take my word for it. 😘

I got a couple new books! I'm really excited to read Leonora Carrington's writing because I love her paintings. I learned about her work in my History of Women Artists class in college.
