Faust
Faust | Goethe
In this sequel to Faust, Mephistopheles takes Faust on a journey through ancient Greek mythology, conjuring for him the insurpassably beautiful Helen of Troy, as well as the classical gods. Faust falls in love with and marries Helen, embodying for Goethe his 'imaginative longing to join poetically the Romantic Medievalism of the germanic West to the classical genius of the Greeks'. Further to the themes of redemption and salvation in this great drama, are Goethe's eerie premonitions of modern phenomena such as inflation and the creation of life by scientific synthesis.

#nonbookish post

Went to a singing workshop at the local theatre. We were working on one of the rehearsal stages where they are practicing for an opera version of Faust.

rockpools That sounds like a great afternoon! 4y
GingerAntics Oh, Faust is on my reading list!!! 4y
julesG @GingerAntics It was required reading in school. And like some of Goethe's poems, we dissected it. 4y
GingerAntics Must everything be dissected? What about just enjoying it and discussing it? Gah. 4y

#DevilsDue TNG 4.13 Yet another Phase II script adapted for TNG. This one is not exactly good but it's entertaining at least. Courtroom drama with a side of con artist. Just your basic Faustian deal plot with a techno twist.

Of course Faust is what I pick! The Foundational Faust™ is Goethe's, one I have not read since early adolescence. Alternatively Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus works in a pinch.

I gave this 4 stars on goodreads mostly because of the first part. The second part got very confusing and I kind of lost track of the plot and the characters (reading the translator's notes cleared a lot of things up though). I loved the character of Mephistopheles and I loved his and Faust's banter. Even though M. is playing Faust to get his soul, they become quite the dynamic duo and I would say maybe even friends.

sneirr Even though I liked the second pary less than the first, I do think it's necessary for the plot. (And Goethe does some amazing things with Greek mythology and with language.) The second part shows how Faust keeps wanting bigger things and ultimately remains unfulfilled (thus winning his bet against Mephistopheles!). It shows clearly this tragedy is about the modern human condition. 8y
