Calamity in Kent
Calamity in Kent | John Rowland
7 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
In the peaceful seaside town of Broadgate, an impossible crime occurs. The operator of the cliff railway locks the empty carriage one evening; when he returns to work next morning, a dead body is locked inside - a man who has been stabbed in the back. Jimmy London, a newspaper reporter, is first on the scene. He is quick on the trail for clues - and agrees to pool his knowledge with Inspector Shelley of Scotland Yard, who is holidaying in the area. Mistrustful of the plodding local policeman, Inspector Beech, the two men launch their own investigation into this most baffling locked-room mystery.

Pickpick

Okay, I don't love the narrator, I don't think he's half as clever as he thinks he is and wooow the interference with crime scenes, but it's fairly typical for a British Library Crime Classic in that it has that Golden Age of crime feel many of them share, and that was exactly what I needed today.

In the mood to read, couldn't figure out what, so it seemed like a British Library Crime Classic would most likely be a good pick! IIRC, I did not love the other book by John Rowland I've read, but it was okay. So far I don't love the narrative voice, I must admit.

Mehso-so

Not my favourite of the British Library Crime series, but still a fun read. My problem was mostly with the way the resolution unfolded. But that‘s not to say that the solution doesn‘t work, however it‘ll get super spoiler-y if I explain more!

AlaMich I love the cover! 6y
Verity @AlaMich I know! They‘re all so pretty in this series. 6y

Mehso-so

3/5 but a so-so for the narrator's repetition of things that he had just explained, and the continuity error where Dr Gordon the police surgeon became Dr Duncan. Also, the word "Doctor" was inconsistently capitalized when referring to "the doctor". I suspect one more editorial pass that fixed all these things might have made this a stronger book (although it was by no means terrible).

rabbitprincess And yes I am aware that noticing inconsistent capitalization is nerdy, but it is an occupational hazard. #editorlife 6y

I love this cover! The book is set in the seaside town of Broadgate, but the gorgeous beach makes me think of our family trip to Cornwall, specifically St. Ives.
