Green Man Anthology: Tales from the Mythic Forest
Green Man Anthology: Tales from the Mythic Forest | Charles Vess
8 posts | 12 read | 20 to read
One of our most enduring, universal myths is that of the Green Man-the spirit who stands for Nature in its most wild and untamed form, a man with leaves for hair who dwells deep within the mythic forest. Through the ages and around the world, the Green Man and other nature spirits have appeared in stories, songs, and artwork, as well as many beloved fantasy novels, including Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." Now Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, the acclaimed editors of over thirty anthologies, have gathered some of today's finest writers of magical fiction-including, among many others, the bestselling Neil Gaiman ("Sandman; American Gods"), Jane Yolen ("Briar Rose"), Gregory Maguire ("Wicked"), and Patricia A. McKillip ("The Tower at Stony Wood")-to interpret the spirits of nature in short stories and poetry. Folklorist and artist Charles Vess ("Stardust") brings his stellar eye and brush to the decorations, and Windling provides an introduction exploring Green Man symbolism and forest myth. "The Green Man" will become required reading for teenagers and adults alike-not only for fans of fantasy fiction, but for all readers interested in mythology and the mysteries of the wilderness. Introduction by Terri Winding. Cover and decorations by Charles Vess.

Book one finished (didn't expect to get through so much of it last night, so there wasn't much to read this morning). On to book 2!

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 A great book cover. 4y

Because I'm a sucker for all this readathon stuff....

Goals: finish reading The Green Man and also read either Coyote Road (another Datlow/Windling YA collection) or A Little Princess, depending on what I'm in the mood for....

"...I'll tell the wind my name, and no one else. True madness takes or leaves us in the wood halfway through our lives. My skin will be my face now...

I'll leave the way of words to walk the wood. I'll be the forest's man, and greet the sun, and feel the silence blossom on my tongue like language."

I LOVELOVELOVE this anthology of Green Man stories. Datlow & Windling generally make great anthologies, but this tops the list! Authors include Tanith Lee, Neil Gaiman, Gregory Maguire, Patricia McKillip, Jane Yolen, Midori Snyder, etc.
AWESOME.

This anthology series of #shortstories are the best. Amazing authors, cool themes for each edition, and delightful bits of art from Charles Vess on each chapter header.
