House Arrest
House Arrest | K.A. Holt
34 posts | 46 read | 12 to read
Timothy is on probation. It's a strange word—something that happens to other kids, to delinquents, not to kids like him. And yet, he is under house arrest for the next year. He must check in weekly with a probation officer and a therapist, and keep a journal for an entire year. And mostly, he has to stay out of trouble. But when he must take drastic measures to help his struggling family, staying out of trouble proves more difficult than Timothy ever thought it would be. By turns touching and funny, and always original, House Arrest is a middlegrade novel in verse about one boy's path to redemption as he navigates life with a sick brother, a grieving mother, and one tough probation officer.

House arrest is a realistic fiction book by K.A. Holt. It is about a middle school boy named Timothy who is on probation. He has a younger brother who is very sick, a father who left as soon as his brother was born, and has to write in a journal for a year. I really liked this book because it is a novel in verse and I have never read a book written in this way. It is a quick read and I would definitely recommend reading it.

This is a book about a boy who‘s little brother has a trach, that is a tube in his throat to help him breath. His family is just him, Levi, and his mom. His dad left them with no notice. Timothy was put on house arrest for a year for stealing when all he was trying to do was help his mom to get money for a surgery for his brother. If you like books that deal with some real life struggles that some people deal with then this is the book for you.

MrsBabki I loved the format of this book - a novel in verse can tell such a powerful story. 5y

I just blew through this audio.... and immediately requested the sequel. This was not at all what I expected-it was so much more! And the audio‘s narrator seriously nailed the the feeling of anguish in his voice. Amazing. #impulseread #wintergames #teamnutcracker

I really enjoyed this book even though it‘s not what I expected or the type of writing that isn‘t really my style. The book was a pretty fast read and is definitely something I would recommend, it did get concussing sometimes when something big or quite important happens. The author (or Timmothy writing in his journal) didn‘t give much information when the big things happen so it gets you thinking.

Cassie_kosolofski3 Sorry for the spelling mistakes 5y

I love the storyline and the main character and how he deals with it, And it shows how it would be in house arrest.

This book was super good if you like adventure. I think it was adventure because his little brother is very sick, and they can‘t afford the medicine for him. So Timothy steels money so he can buy the medicine. But he gets caught so he is under house arrest for 1 year.

MissYaremcio Max, this sounds like an interesting book and I can't wait to hear more about it. The summary and tone that you described was a little vague, but otherwise well done! 5y

This book was amazing! It got me back into reading after a summer of big Nate and diary of a wimpy kid. The flowing, free verse writing made the pacing of this book incredible. It had diverse characters and themes that were relatable for me (with anxiety and living in a big family) and over all told a great story of hope and dreams!

MrsBabki I am so grateful you are in my world this year! Amazing student and human! 5y

Written in verse. This story is intense. A determined young man makes a mistake and os sentenced to house arrest. Determined to care for his ailing brother no matter the cost, sometimes his frustration gets the best of him. Filled with humor and hope.

This is a middle grade book that will punch you in your adult gut. I am not generally a fan of free verse poetry but it works here. This is a quick, powerful, thoughtful book that sends a hell of a message about family and morality and right v wrong. The ending is hard and sad but couldn‘t have been any other way. It is definitely a book for MG readers (I thought it was YA going in) and is written as such. So if that bothers you, pass on it.

RaimeyGallant I love that poetry is being published in MG. 7y

This novel in verse tells the story of Levi‘s older brother, who takes a wallet so he can buy medicine to help his baby brother. Through journal writing we learn about the struggle of raising a very sick brother and how hard it is to make ends meet. Beautifully told by K.A. Holt.

SarahBradley There is a sequel! 6y

Timothy would do anything for his baby brother, Levi. Learn sign language, clean his teach tube - even steal a wallet to pay for medicine. This is his year long journey chronicling his time under house arrest. A story of family, love, and pain, this is a wonderful Middle Grade novel.

I thought I would finish it yesterday so I could start my October books fresh today, but I got sleepy and ended up finishing it today. Wonderful middle grade novel in verse about a boy who is on probation after stealing a credit card to pay for medication for his sick baby brother. It is written as his court-ordered journal, where he works through his feelings about his dad leaving, his mom being overworked, and having no money.

Ms.Story Wow, that certainly sounds like an interesting school age read. 7y

Sad, but inspiring. This book makes readers remember that we don't know the story of the person next to us. Timothy is a wonderful son and brother who made a bad decision when trying to help his family. I laughed, I cried, and I sighed. And I loved the novel-in-verse format.

This book packed a punch. Genuine LOL moments but for much of it you'll need tissues. Really interesting ending too. A brother's love, free verse, coming of age - great young teen read.

It might not be the best idea for a new mom to read a book with a very sick baby in it. But oh, such a good book

Fiddleysticks I was reading and feeding my son and found the sick baby aspect hard, but the book was too good to put down! 7y

Gorgeous language, moving story. I'm working through a lot of novels-in-verse now and this should be at the top of every list.
