“Those who think of the Amazon as a Green Hell, bring only their own fears and prejudices to this amazing land. For whether a place is a hell or a heaven rests in yourself, and those who go with courage and an open mind may find themselves in Paradise.”

There is so much to like about this book..engaging story, likeable main characters, subtle humour, and most of all, solid writing that vividly brings to life the wonderful, exotic ⬇️

erzascarletbookgasm .... journey to the Amazon. I‘ve liked The Star of Kazan, and this book is equally mesmerising in its setting. 3y

This is my first book by Eva Ibbotson and it won‘t be my last. I loved everything about this story-especially the beautiful imagery created with words such as the exotic fruit, the green vined jungle and the medicinal herb remedies. Maia is a strong heroine throughout who is brave, positive and full of life. The awful Carter family were deplorable but Miss Minton the Governess was lovely. A great read for middle graders.

Museums do not usually show stuffed lapdogs, but the curator was an Englishman with a kind heart and Mrs Winterbotham, who had raised a lot of money for the museum, had really loved her dog.

Juvenile fiction, beautifully written. Engaging. Reminiscent of L.M. Montgomery‘s ‘Blue Castle‘ about the wonders of nature. Set in early 20th century in Brazil.
Hoping we get to find out more about Maia‘s parents.

This was another of my childhood favorites. Maia, a young girl who loses her parents, is sent to her closest relatives who happen to live in the Amazonas. There, Maia discovers a whole new world, wild nature, and a lot of secrets. Her curious nature allows her to explore and learn about the new world she lives in, all the while making new friends and learning to enjoy life.

RadicalReader @TheAnitaAlvarez do you prefer digital books, audiobook or physical books and why? 6y
TheAnitaAlvarez @RadicalReader i love the feel of physical books, the smell, and writing on the margins. But since I‘ve been moving around a lot lately, my kindle has become my best friend once again (easier to carry than the amount of books I can read in a month). I‘ve never used audiobooks, they don‘t appeal to me, I guess 6y

I first read this book when I was much younger, I loved it then and I loved it when I reread last year (I tend to never reread books) this was before goodreads brought in the reread feature so I annoyingly had to change the original date I had read it. I throughly recommend this book. It is a treasured book to me ❤️

In 1910, Maia, an orphan, has been sent from England to start a new life with distant relatives in Manaus, hundreds of miles up the Amazon. She soon discovers a different world full of new experiences and adventures. It's a warm-hearted tale of friendship and our responsibility to those around us. Packed with exciting adventures, the book is suitable for middle grade readers but adults will find the story satisfying. #welcometothejungle #junetunz

tpixie Great review. I've never heard of the Nestle medal! 7y
erzascarletbookgasm @tpixie I didn't know before, but it was one of UK‘s longest running prizes and "helped to launch the careers of many of today‘s top children‘s writers, including J K Rowling and Lauren Child, who have each won the prize three times." 7y
tpixie @erzascarletbookgasm awesome info! Thx. I'll have to find out more about Lauren Child! 7y
LauraBrook I just bought this for a friends daughters birthday! I haven't read it yet (will rectify that soon), and have others of hers on my shelf! 7y

Eva Ibbotson was one of the first authors I started reading on my own when I was a young girl. She will always have a spot in my heart. #booktober #bookssetinsamerica @RealLifeReading

Looking for a book like this one to do with middle grade readers. Must be set in South America. Any suggestions?
