Caldecott Winner, Mirette on the High Wire is a great RF, S book for your primary students! Mirette has lived most of her life at a boarding house with her mom. One day a famous tight rope walker comes by to preform for the people at the boarding house. Mirette, who immediately falls in love with the sport, asks the Great Billini to teach her. He agrees and begins to teach her. Through their time together, Mirette helps him overcome his fears

MFlowers while he teaches her she can be brave. This book provides a great opportunity to introduce the question, “What do I do when I'm afraid?“ The following cpalms link helps guide teacher into a discussion similar: https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5684
Here, you are looking for words and phrases that suggest feelings and appeals to the senses. That's a perfect way to discuss fear and what happens when you feel it.

MFlowers The EL strategy that accompanies this book is 3: encourage self talk (positive thinking). We want all of our students to feel comfortable sharing their fears and questions. The UDL principle that aligns well with this lesson is 8.3: foster collaboration and community. We want the students to feel apart of their classroom community, especially enough to share and discuss topics such as this. #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 3y
DrSpalding When you look at the front cover of this book you know that it took place in the past. What genre do you believe it is now? I like the idea of discussing fear and maybe even connecting it with the narrative element of theme. 3y

Mirette on the High Wire written by Emily Arnold McCully is a Caldecott award winning HF book. This would be a great RA book about how Mirette meets a famous High Wire Walker makes Bellini in her mother‘s boardinghouse.

AlyssaB An UDL strategy is 3.1 to activate or supply background knowledge. An ESOL strategy would be 14 to simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. A resource https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/mirette-high-w... which gives a guided discussion to use with your students while reading the book. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y
DrSpalding Just by looking at the front cover, you know this is historical fiction! Another quality resource from the largest publisher of children‘s books. Nice alignment. 4y

Mirette on the High Wire written by Emily Arnold McCully is a Caldecott award winning book. This is a great realistic fiction picture book that could be used as a RA in a classroom. It‘s about a young girl who is intrigued by a man who was once a master wire- walker but little does she know he holds a deep fear that she will help him to overcome.

BRaulerson An activity for this story would be https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/mirette-highwi...
The ESOL Strategy that would work great with this story is encouraging self-talk and positive thinking. I would also use Teach think, pair, and share strategies in groups. #UCFLAE3414F19

Winner of the Randolph Caldecott Medal. Gave a good plot line and showed us good characters that bounced off great ideas and inspiration to one another. It gave a good theme that teaches kid not to give up when things might get rough and to also always push yourself to get better.

Enjoyed the bond Mirette and Mr. Ballini created. He taught her an unique skill and she taught him to believe in himself and to never be scared.

Mirrette on the High Wire is a RF Caldecott winning PB written and Illustrated by Emily Arnold McCully. This is one of the books I read 100x as a child. It‘s a captivating book about an apprentice tight right rope walker named Mirrette. This book is great for PR. You can use this text to enhance fluency and compression skills. Linked below is a teacher resource. I would use ESL strategy #17 and UDL 6.1 for this book.

DrSpalding Just looking at the front cover, what would be the correct genre? Scholastic is a high-quality resource! 5y

#MusicalNewYear Day 16: The setting of the picture book was 120 years ago during the height of the artiste-culturati scene in Paris - very #LaVieBoheme. Mirette was at the very heart of it all as acrobats, mimes, artists, jugglers gather from all over the globe and congregate in her mother‘s, Madame Gateau‘s, boardinghouse on English Street, believed to be the best place to stay at the time. Mirette on the High Wire, written and illustrated by, Emily Arnold McaCully, is a super fun HF Caldecott winning book. This book would be excellent for a RA. The kids will love to be read aloud this exciting book about Mirrette and how she meets a famous High Wire walker named Bellini! I love this book because it shows to never give up and to go for what you love!

emilybanne A great activity can be found here: https://www.brighthubeducation.com/elementary-school-activities/72451-mirette-on... This website has some different writing prompts students can use. One of them is, "How do Mirette and Bellini help each other?" This fits with UDL 4.1 which is varying the methods for response and navigation. The students will be responding in writing or drawing as they complete the activity. 6y
emilybanne An ESOL Strategy is 16 which is to Intergrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities . They will be doing all of those things with the activity! #UCFLAE3414SUB18 6y

Mirette on the High Wire by Emily Arnold McCully is a Caldecott award book and will make a great addition to any classroom library for IR. This HF book is about a young girl named Mirette, who meets a famous retired high wire walker, Bellini. Mirette then learns how to high wire walk with the help of Bellini. One EL strategy that can be used is 2, encourage self-talk (positive thinking). UDL strategy 6.1, guide appropriate goal-setting.

Mirette on the High Wire is an excellent historical fiction choice for RA that won the distinguished Caldecott Medal in 1993. The story is about a young girl living in Paris who teaches herself how to tight rope walk and becomes the pupil of a very famous rope performer, Bellini. It's a sweet inspirational text that teaches the moral lesson of never giving up and finding a role model to look up to. #ucflae3414f17

farynantenucci https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/mirette-highwi... This website has a great activity for this book called "Who Are Our Heroes?" It takes students through listing their goals and interests, and doing a mini research project to find a hero in history that aligns with them. This works perfectly with the book as Mirette found Bellini as her hero. 7y
farynantenucci The UDL strategy I chose to go with this book is 3.1- activate or supply background knowledge. Students would benefit from this because the book takes place in Paris and has some French language in it and it would be helpful for students to review this information ahead of reading. 7y
farynantenucci The ESOL strategy I chose was #20. This ties into the UDL strategy as well because listing important words and phrases from the book before reading, that students may not be familiar with can support them through the text and keep them engaged. 7y
DrSpalding This is a wonderful book selection. Your UDL/EL strategies are spot on. This is a wonderful book to expose students to a historical time period! 7y
