This book was about a silverback gorilla named Ivan who was held in captivity for most of his life. This gorilla lived alongside an elephant named Stella and eventually a baby elephant as well.

The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins is a SF novel that would be a great LC or IR in your classroom. The book is about a young girl named Katniss Everdeen and 23 other kids who fight for their life to survive the Hunger Games, only one is allowed to come out alive. Award: Hal Clement Award

Rumpelstiltskin is another TL written and illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky which could be used as an AS teaching strategy. The story is about a strange little man helping the miller‘s daughter spin straw into gold for the kingdom the condition that she will give him her firstborn child. His book also won a silver Caldecott award for the great illustrations.

Rapunzel is a TL written and illustrated by Paul O. Zelensky which is a classic about how a beautiful girl with long golden hair is kept imprisoned in a lonely tower by a sorceress. This book could be a great addition for an author study because Paul O. Zelensky has written many TL books. The book also won a golden Caldecott Medal because Zelensky use oil paintings to create the illustrations.

Song and Dance Man written by Karen Ackerman and illustrated by Stephen Gammell is another Caldecott Award winning RF book. This book is about a grandpa who tells stories about the time of his life when he would dance on stage. He even showed the kids all his old shoes which makes him feel alive again. An UDL strategy would be 8.3 to foster collaboration and community.

Mysteries & Marvels of Insect Life by Dr. Jennifer Owen is a NF book all about creepy, crawly, gross insects in my opinion. This book would be a RA in science when learning about insects with detailed facts and statements. #UCFLAE3414F19

Mirette on the High Wire written by Emily Arnold McCully is a Caldecott award winning HF book. This would be a great RA book about how Mirette meets a famous High Wire Walker makes Bellini in her mother‘s boardinghouse.

The Sense books are written by Ellen Weiss and Elaine Landau. These books are NF and would be great for teaching children their senses at a young age. I would use these books as a RA. A child needs to learn all about their senses as the continue to grow because they will use them for as long as can.

A Flag for our Country written by Eve Spencer is a great collection for our class library. It is a NF book which can be used as a RA or S especially on Flag Day! This book is all about the flag and Betsy Ross life when making the flag.

What Makes a Shadow? is a great NF book all about what shadows can be made written by Clyde Robert Bulla and illustrated by June Otani This book would be a great RA or SR. I used this book in my classroom within my shadow unit where we taught the kids all about them. They always were so excited to go outside and see their shadow.

This book was a great read for me. I enjoy every minute. It is a F book and won the Newberry Award. This book would be a great LC or IR. This book is about how a world lives in fear of the witch which takes a baby once a year to keep from coming after the rest of the town. An ESOL strategy would be 39 which could give students the chance to learn about Rosa through homework of assigned short readings. An UDL principle would be 2.3 which supports decoding of text, mathematical notation and symbols.

This F picture book is all about family coming to visit their relatives and explores all the benefits as well as struggles of family in town. This book would be a great RA around holiday time or vacation to remind students that family is for fun and support. It also won a Caldecott award.

MTH Dinosaurs Before Dark morning is a F which could be used as an IR/GR/PR/LC. Before Annie and Jack can find out the mysterious treehouse takes them to the prehistoric past. Are they able to make it home before the dinosaurs eat them?

The focus of the book is to teach big or new vocabulary words such as privacy, consequence or irate. This book would be a great RA or S for students when teaching new vocabulary. An ESOL strategy would be 5 which teaches technical vocabulary supporting key concepts.
