Trying to Float
Trying to Float: Chronicles of a Girl in the Chelsea Hotel | Nicolaia Rips
17 posts | 11 read | 14 to read
"They were like balloons that had escaped a child's grasp - pointlessly floating. "Focus!" I would plead with my mother. And my father was forever being diverted." Allow us to introduce you to the Rips family: Michael, Sheila and daughter Nicolaia, the last denizens of New York's famous Chelsea Hotel. Better yet, allow Nicolaia to introduce them since it's her earnest, wry, occasionally wicked, but always affectionate observations that you'll find in her memoir, Trying to Float. Not only a coming-of-age story set in an enigmatic New York landmark, this is also the clever love story of a family, navigating the curiosities of their home.

I put this book on hold at the library because in the full title she mentions the Chelsea hotel. While she did live there the book is just about her growing up awkwardly and she writes very well. I guess I am giving it a so-so because I felt duped 😜

emilyhaldi I was disappointed to hear that this book didn't focus largely on the hotel... 😏 7y

This book about growing up living in the Chelsea Hotel was sweet. Being an old punkette at heart, I kind of wanted more dish about its' residents, but her story was still fun to read. #floating. #junebookbugs

Bailedbailed

Full of amusing vignettes, but after finding out the author was 17 at the time of writing, I couldn't take it seriously as a "memoir," and had to stop reading.

Just ok. I never got very interested in it and might have even bailed if it hadn't been so short.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It's being marketed as a memoir about growing up in the Chelsea Hotel but, to me, it read like a YA coming of age story.

A book of stories for all the awkward, lonely, misfit kids out there. Full of laughs, I really enjoyed this one and identified with the main character a bit more than I'd like to remember 😊

Unlike Barbie, Jade had a brain. She was smart and witty and I spent as much time in her apartment as my parents and Jade would allow. Upon my arrival she would always offer a glass of champagne. I reminded her every time, "I'm ten. I don't drink..."Too bad. It's French, from a small vineyard."

This book was a sweet story about an awkward young lady who grows up while living at The Chelsea. It was a quick, fun read. I guess I was hoping for more dirt about the artists living there. This book is not that.

Next up. I love a good story about The Chelsea Hotel! Getting some mixed reviews on this one. The author is still a teenager. Guess we'll see soon enough!

ValerieAndBooks Now I'm wondering how a teenager managed to get published!! I mean, what kind of contacts etc?? 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @ValerieAndBooks I don't know. Perhaps I'll find out as I go along. 8y

I wish this author's note was at the beginning because even though the author's stories were very funny they were sometimes unbelievable. If I had gone into it knowing she played around with her memories, I might have enjoyed it more. It was well-written though and by an extremely young author.

Delightful. Whimsical, fond narrative about a truly it takes a village upbringing. As a child of hippies I relate. Good memoir and top notch summer and (gulp) back to school reading. A good picture of NYC life.
