"When it comes to inventing new worlds, he's as skilled as J.R.R. Tolkien and Frank Herbert." -Christopher Paolini, bestselling author of Eragon. Southmarch Castle is about to be caught between two implacable enemies, the ancient, immortal Qar and the insane god-king, the Autarch of Xis. Meanwhile, its two young defenders, Princess Briony and Prince Barrick, are both trapped far away from home and fighting for their lives. And now, something is awakening underneath Southmarch Castle, something powerful and terrible that the world has not seen for thousands of years. Can Barrick and Briony, along with a tiny handful of allies, ordinary and extraordinary, find a way to save their world and prevent the rise of a terrible new age-an age of unending darkness?

“‘Feeling Good‘ was written to express a particular kind of euphoria: that which comes with liberation from oppression.”

This book may be set in a fictional land but it is definitely full of diverse characters
#DiverseRead 👩🏻👩🏼👩🏽👩🏾👩🏿👩🏻‍🦰 #ANewChapter 🥂

Question: Am I the only one who doesn‘t really pay attention to the description/ethnicity of the characters in the books I read? I tend to pay attention to the story, and actions & personalities of the characters not what they are supposed to look like.

#BookNerd 💙📚🤓

xicanti The thing is--and I promise I don't mean this in a nasty or condescending way--ethnicity is about more than what people look like. People have to navigate the world in different ways because the goal posts aren't in the same place for everyone, and that has a major impact on personality traits and peoples' actions. It's a complex issue for a short Litst comment, so I'd encourage you to look up "intersectionality." There's lots out there. 5y
JuliaTheBookNerd @xicanti I‘ve never heard of intersectionality, I‘ll have to look into it 😊 5y
Shaneyney I‘ve read a lot by Tad Williams. Not sure if I‘ve read this one or not. Is it part of a series? 5y

rjsthumbelina So, I used to not notice. But what I have found is that if no descriptions are given (or at least noticed by me), then I default to picturing a white person. And I do find that problematic, at least for me - I make it a goal now to read books with diverse characters so that I make sure I am building as much empathy with characters that don't look like me as those that do. This book sounds really good! 5y
BooksMcD @rjsthumbelina I don‘t think that‘s on you! The way authors write, the default race for their characters is usually their own. So if they‘re white they only offer a descriptor of race if the person isn‘t white. The default is white. AALANA authors tend to do the same thing and only offer description when the race is different from their own. Obvi I haven‘t read everyone, but reading AALANA might be the best way to gain or challenge perspective. 😊 5y

hermyknee Omg! I love everything!!! So cute!!! 💖💖💖 5y
mrsmarch I took the Pottermore quiz with my 5 year old and she sorted in to Ravenclaw — which if anyone had ever met Luna, would make COMPLETE sense. She‘s a bit “luny” too but a keen observer. 5y
wanderinglynn Too adorable! ❤️ 5y

Pickpick

When it comes to traditional epic fantasy, Tad Williams is seriously underrated! The Shadowmarch books are a wonderful foray into a fantasy world of gods and goddesses, little people, magic, war and adventure. If you looking to get lost in a magical realm that is at times wondrous and at times dark and unsettling, this series is a perfect fit!
