Going Solo
Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone | Eric Klinenberg
7 posts | 8 read | 13 to read
A revelatory examination of the most significant demographic shift since the Baby Boomthe sharp increase in the number of people who live alonethat offers surprising insights on the benefits of this epochal change In 1950, only 22 percent of American adults were single. Today, more than 50 percent of American adults are single, and 31 millionroughly one out of every seven adultslive alone. People who live alone make up 28 percent of all U.S. households, which makes them more common than any other domestic unit, including the nuclear family. In GOING SOLO, renowned sociologist and author Eric Klinenberg proves that these numbers are more than just a passing trend. They are, in fact, evidence of the biggest demographic shift since the Baby Boom: we are learning to go solo, and crafting new ways of living in the process. Klinenberg explores the dramatic rise of solo living, and examines the seismic impact its having on our culture, business, and politics. Though conventional wisdom tells us that living by oneself leads to loneliness and isolation, Klinenberg shows that most solo dwellers are deeply engaged in social and civic life. In fact, compared with their married counterparts, they are more likely to eat out and exercise, go to art and music classes, attend public events and lectures, and volunteer. Theres even evidence that people who live alone enjoy better mental health than unmarried people who live with others and have more environmentally sustainable lifestyles than families, since they favor urban apartments over large suburban homes. Drawing on over three hundred in-depth interviews with men and women of all ages and every class, Klinenberg reaches a startling conclusion: in a world of ubiquitous media and hyperconnectivity, this way of life can help us discover ourselves and appreciate the pleasure of good company. With eye-opening statistics, original data, and vivid portraits of people who go solo, Klinenberg upends conventional wisdom to deliver the definitive take on how the rise of living alone is transforming the American experience. GOING SOLO is a powerful and necessary assessment of an unprecedented social change.

I finished this #nonfiction #audiobook while walking over recently harvested fields this afternoon. It‘s a look at the increase in people living alone around the world but specifically focuses on life alone in U.S. cities. I found the statistics interesting and some information thought provoking. However, I found nothing really surprising and wished there was a bit about rural situations.

TheAromaofBooks I feel like rural areas are often ignored during studies of this type. It would be interesting to see some comparisons as to whether increases of people living alone is something happening more in urban areas, or if it is across the country no matter what the population density of the area. 5y
Daisey @TheAromaofBooks Based on what was included, I would guess that an increase is also happening in rural areas but not quite to the same extent. It would have been great to see the statistics, even without including interviews and other specifics. 5y

“Schumpeter may well have seen singles as rational. But in a survey of Americans conducted in 1957, more than half the respondents said that unmarried people were "sick", "immoral", or "neurotic," while about a third viewed them "neutrally".”

Wow. ?

hermyknee Is this book good? I'm really interested in reading it. Can't wait to hear your thoughts! 7y

dariazeoli @hermyknee It's definitely worth a look. As someone who will eventually go solo again in the future, it covers topics I think about, like aging/deteriorating health when living alone, and how men & women handle solo living differently. 7y

This book, while presenting sociological research is easily accessible for the general public and doesn't sacrifice the rigor of Klinenberg's research. It is an interesting book on a growing proportion of the population, those who are single and live alone.

I decided to read this after reading Modern Romance, which the author co-wrote with comedian Aziz Ansari. Though there's no comedy here, the book is equally readable and interesting. Helped me rethink cultural norms about family life vs. living alone. Since it's more and more likely that we will all spend some part of our adult lives living alone, we ought to change our attitudes as well as our policies to reflect this reality.

Next up- so far so good. It's an interesting look at living alone, at the 'stigma' and how the number of ppl doing so has sky rocketed over the years. I've lived alone before, but always while in a relationship- now I'm on my own for real and I'm super excited. Picked this up to see other ppls experiences! I love random nonfiction like this.
