The Art of Fiction
The Art of Fiction: Notes on Craft for Young Writers | John Gardner
This classic guide, from the renowned novelist and professor, has helped transform generations of aspiring writers into masterful writersand will continue to do so for many years to come. John Gardner was almost as famous as a teacher of creative writing as he was for his own works. In this practical, instructive handbook, based on the courses and seminars that he gave, he explains, simply and cogently, the principles and techniques of good writing. Gardners lessons, exemplified with detailed excerpts from classic works of literature, sweep across a complete range of topicsfrom the nature of aesthetics to the shape of a refined sentence. Written with passion, precision, and a deep respect for the art of writing, Gardners book serves by turns as a critic, mentor, and friend. Anyone who has ever thought of taking the step from reader to writer should begin here. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

A classic with good reason: funny, intelligent, sensible, quirky, and passionate. Concerned with mastery of fiction as a complex art; it addresses structure and common patterns without encouraging formulaic writing. Also, I think this is the only writing book I‘ve read that contains — right at the end — a reminder that words have power, that a good writer tries to avoid doing harm and tries to inspire readers instead. A definite pick! 👍

Sunraven I also really like that it includes a collection of writing exercises right at the end, so that I can always go straight there and pick one out, rather than flipping around through the book for them. 4y

“To read well, one also needs a certain kind of mastery.”

Enjoying this book so far, but I do tend to like books that start off with some snark and continue by saying that rule-following is overrated. 😁

Taking a break at mile 43 of today's heavenly long bike ride, and just wrote the first paragraph of a chapter -- and really excited by it. #Dread #Regret #Foreshadowing #CrazyOminous #amwriting @DoubledayBooks

Mehso-so

This is a widely acknowledged classic in the teaching-of-writing genre. Published in 1982, it hasn't aged as well as one might hope (compare Strunk & White), but the author is up-front about his beliefs and preferred texts. I could see myself returning to it for some of the exercises and notes on technique (especially what to avoid!).

#bookmail --- An addition to my #writing collection. Any #writer or #poet Littens out there with recommendations?

LectricSheep I included several essays from "the art of" series in my creative writing syllabus, especially The Art of Description and The Art of Attention. The whole series is done by Graywolf, and all the ones I've read are well-written and thought-provoking! 8y
rachellayown I just finished THE KITE AND THE STRING, which is a good one. I'm just about to post a review! 8y
