The Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway
The Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway | Ernest Hemingway
8 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
Before he gained wide fame as a novelist, Ernest Hemingway established his literary reputation with his short stories. This collection, The Short Stories, originally published in 1938, is definitive. Among these forty-nine short stories are Hemingway's earliest efforts, written when he was a young foreign correspondent in Paris, and such masterpieces as "Hills Like White Elephants," "The Killers," "The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber," and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." Set in the varied landscapes of Spain, Africa, and the American Midwest, this collection traces the development and maturation of Hemingway's distinct and revolutionary storytelling style -- from the plain, bald language of his first story, "Up in Michigan," to the seamless prose and spare, eloquent pathos of "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" to the expansive solitude of the Big Two-Hearted River stories. These stories showcase the singular talent of a master, the most important American writer of the twentieth century.

I don‘t care how many historians speak well of him. Animal lovers will hate how many stories he wrote with main characters killing them for sport. Some of his stories were like he was writing under the influence and sounded like they were written by 5 year olds. One of the characters in A Pursuit Race was obsessed with his bedsheet. Some of the better ones felt unfinished and/or mediocre, and at worst, one nsfw story.

JohnLAndBenji The repetition of nada in A Clean Well Lit Place was to the point where it lost its meaning. I‘m sure it would offend every hispanic person ever (edited) 1y

Nothing says “questioning my manhood” like your wife cheating on you after you failed to kill a wild animal. #ernesthemingway #audiobook

To be able to say: I loved this person, we had a hell of a nice time together, it‘s over but in a way it will never be over and I do know that I for sure loved this person, to be able to say that and mean it, that‘s rare, señor. That‘s rare and valuable.

Of course, when looking for somewhere to have a drink after an event, I end up at a place called Hemingway's!

"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed" --Ernest Hemingway
I picked up this typewriter at an auction a few years ago and had no idea how heavy it was! I had to carry it several blocks in the snow back to my car, but it totally worth it ?

saresmoore It seems like vintage typewriters should come with vintage Radio Flyer wagons to tote them home! 8y

I'm not a #shortstory reader so we dipped into my husband's massive collection, unfortunately several not listed in Litsy. These were a few from one of his shelves. #booktober
