Fender Lizards
Fender Lizards | Joe R Lansdale
5 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
The unmistakable accent of the Piney Woods of East Texas rolls from the pages of "Fender Lizards," Joe R. Lansdale's tale of the life and love and work of one Dot Sherman, who delivers on her promise that her story is "the real thing from beginning to end." Dot waitresses on roller skates at the Dairy Bob, doesn't care for smoking at least partly on account of her dad having never returned from a cigarette run, and carries on the family tradition of philosophizing. Life hasn't done her any favors in her seventeen years so far. But if there was ever a heroine built for turning things upside down and seeing what shakes out, it's Dot. Determined to find out who she is and why she's the way she is, an opportunity presents itself when her heretofore-unknown uncle suddenly moves his camper into the front yard. As in his classic novels "The Bottoms" and "The Magic Wagon," multiple-award-winning Lansdale instills place with character and character with place. Here is an overlooked world and a cast of real folks that prove unforgettable, all rendered in one of American fiction's most authentic voices.

I'm at the main library branch again today to finish up my weeding of the adult Fantasy/SF collection! Decided to highlight a few of the best of the worst titles I found! What exactly is....a fender lizard? 🤔🤣😂 #librarylove #librariansoflitsy

Leftcoastzen Though not heard of that one , his Hap & Leonard books are good! Think he won an Edgar for 2y
Branwen @Leftcoastzen That's really awesome! 😃 We have that other series, and I'm fairly certain they get checked put much more frequently than this one! I'll have to look into them! 2y
Leftcoastzen I‘m definitely skeptical about Fender Lizards 😂 2y
Branwen @Leftcoastzen SAME! 😂🦎 2y

This book blindsided me. I expected a kinda weird fantasy set in the desert, but I got a kinda weird general novella with tons of heart, voice for days, and not a lick of the fantastical to it. FENDER LIZARDS is all about how one East Texas girl closes a few doors and opens a bunch more as she goes about her daily life, processing family stuff and sorta-kinda learning about roller derby along the way. It's excellent and I loved it.

JoScho Is the dog ok? 5y
xicanti @JoScho dog's fine. Part of the main character's journey involves doing community service at a rescue centre. 5y
JoScho Oh good! I always worry about that! 5y

Here's a gratuitous picture of Casey, who's snuggled up with me while I read more of FENDER LIZARDS. I got the book as part of a Subterranean Press Humble Bundle and assumed it was fantasy, but it's actually litfic about a girl in East Texas. I love it so far.

Susannah Face!! 😍 So sweet. 5y

After the hell of The Idea of You (the book by Amanda Prowse I was preapproved for on #NetGalley) I wanted to read a good book. Fender Lizards is a charming book where nothing happens and it was wonderful.

First book of 2017! Great story, I love his Hap and Leonard series also!

lute Just finished The Thicket. Highly recommend it. His westerns are the best! 7y
