Swan
Swan: Poems and Prose Poems | Mary Oliver
11 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
Widely regarded as the "rock star" of American poetry, Mary Oliver is a writer whose words have long had the power to move countless readers. Regularly topping the national poetry best-seller list and drawing thousands to her sold-out readings across the coutnry, Oliver is unparalleled in her impact. As noted in the Los Angeles Times, so many "go to her for solace, regeneration and inspiration" that it is not surprising Vice President Joe Biden chose to read one of her poems during the 9/11 remembrance at Ground Zero. Few poets express the complexities of human experience as skillfully as Mary Oliver. This volume, Oliver's twenty-first book of poetry, contains all new poems on her classic themes. Here, readers will find the deep spiritual sustenance that imbues her writing on nature, love, mortality, and grief. As always, Oliver is an accomplished guide to the rarest and most exquisite insights of the natural world. Ranking "among the finest poets the English language has ever produced," according to the Weekly Standard, Oliver offers us lyrics of great depth and beauty that continue her lifelong work of loving the world.

A breath of fresh air taken in during a quiet walk in the woods. My devotion to nature does not stretch to eating pinecones found in bear scat, but on balance, I empathize with Mary Oliver's worshipful approach to her subject matter, and am invigorated by it.

"Take your busy heart...also to the forest./The song you heard singing in the leaf when you/were a child/is singing still./I am of years lived, so far, seventy-four,/and the leaf is singing still."

We lost a great poet last year. In honor of Mary Oliver‘s birthday today, I‘ll share the first poem I read of hers - the one that made me a fan:

A Fox in the Dark

A fox goes by
in the headlights
like an electric shock.
Then he pauses
at the edge of the road
and the heart, if it is still alive,
feels something—
a yearning
for which we have no name
but which we may remember,
years later,
in the darkness,
upon some other empty road.

#FebruaryFeels Day 16: Every poem of Mary Oliver I consider a #FaveLovePoem, this being one of them. Perhaps Mary Oliver is aware of the earth calling her back home, as can be seen in this Whispered Poem. How many of us can say this same thing: risky endeavours, steadfast loves. My heart is full. #NewYearNewYou Day 30: #Heartbreak. There is simple wisdom in Mary Oliver‘s later poems that spoke of age and an evaluation of her life and how she has lived it. More than anything, I wish that when I grow up, I will be like her: paying attention to the littlest of things and appreciating a bird‘s song with all its beauty and #heartbreak. I shared my thoughts about Mary Oliver‘s poetry collection here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-l42

Mary Oliver passed away today at age 83. The beauty of the words she left behind should not be forgotten in her absence.

at the edge of the road
and the heart, if it is still alive,

feels something-

I have been thinking about Mary Oliver a lot this month - she is one of my favorite poets, and this quote appeared in my daily meditations. It's one of two quotes by #unforgettablewomen that have been on my mind lately. #readwomen
