Dead to Me
Dead to Me | Cath Staincliffe
6 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
A riveting, sharply observed and thoroughly modern police procedural, Dead to Me features a stellar but unlikely female detective team. Detective Constable Janet Scott is subtle and reliable, a diplomatic thinker with a wry sense of humor. She's put in the time and seen it all, but has no desire for the boss's jobshe loves her own too much. Rachel Bailey couldn't be more differentshe's energetic, impulsive, and ambitious, and has just been transferred to the Manchester murder squad. Their commander thinks Rachel's intuition could make her a great cop, but has reservations about her shoot-first-think-later approach, so she partners her with Janet. At first, the match seems to have been made somewhere considerably lower than heaven, but when a teenage girl is found brutally murdered, stabbed to death in her squalid flat on a North Manchester housing estate, both detectives realize they must work together to stop a vicious killer. But the case quickly becomes more complicated than it seems, fraught with dangers neither woman could see coming. Eager to make her mark, Rachel's reckless pursuit of the truth could threaten her future on the squad. And an unexpected turn in the investigation forces Janet to face personal demons. No matter the cost, both must race to stop a vicious killer before it's too late in this riveting novel from award-winning author Cath Staincliffe. "It's always exciting to see a writer get better and better, and Cath Staincliffe is doing just that." --Val McDermid

Not terrible, but not memorable. A reckless rookie is paired with a veteran officer to solve a murder. The boss thinks the rookie has talent and intuition. The veteran officer is not a fan. I don‘t read many police procedural stories, but this seems like it could be a common formula. Some side stories, that frankly I was more interested in, never developed. But I got my “D” for my alphabet challenge! 1/5🔪s

"Rachel Bailey stood, freezing her tits off, on a crime scene cordon in north Manchester."

Yup, that will do nicely...

When I started this British police procedural, I thought it was written before the TV show, but as it turns out it, this is a prequel, written after the show. This put me off a little, but that was purely my prejudice. Great book....I love these three complex female characters, flawed and down to earth, and the realistic details included of modern police work... recommended to anyone who likes a good Brit mystery, and tough female protagonists....

KVanRead I love that show! Sally Wainwright is amazing! 7y

#tbrtuesday and #currentlyreading ... next up on my Kindle.... currently reading first in the 'Scott & Bailey' detective stories.... really enjoying reading about 3(!) tough female police detectives, but discovered it was written after the TV show not before, which kind of put me off a bit.... though it is a prequel... 🤔

Libby1 Have you read the new McEwan yet? The Children Act was the first book of his I'd read and I loved it. 7y
KarenUK @Libby1 not yet.. soon.... I'm a bit of a fan, and have heard great things about Nutshell... Atonement and enduring love are my favorites... The Children's Act is great too... 7y
