A Little More Human
A Little More Human: A Novel | Fiona Maazel
3 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
A dazzling new novel from the author of the weird, thrilling, and inimitable Woke Up Lonely (Marie Claire) Meet Phil Snyder: new father, nursing assistant at a cutting-edge biotech facility on Staten Island, and all-around decent guy. Trouble is, his life is falling apart. His wife has betrayed him, his job involves experimental surgeries with strange side effects, and his father is hiding early-onset dementia. Phil also has a special talent he doesnt want to publicizehes a mind reader and moonlights as Brainstorm, a costumed superhero. But when Phil wakes up from a blackout drunk and is confronted with photos that seem to show him assaulting an unknown woman, even superpowers wont help him. Try as he might, Phil cant remember that night, and so, haunted by the need to know, he mind-reads his way through the lab techs at work, adoring fans at Toy Polloi, and anyone else who gets in his way, in an attempt to determine whether hes capable of such violence. A Little More Human, rife with layers of paranoia and conspiracy, questions how well we really know ourselves, showcasing Fiona Maazel at her tragicomic, freewheeling best.

Mega #bookhaul #2! I supported the Kickstarter campaign of Bookselling without Borders, which sends US booksellers to international book festivals to promote international literature in the US, and my gift for doing so is the entire Graywolf Press catalog for 2017! I think I‘m most excited about Bunk. And the tote bag, of course.

TheWordJar That sounds like an amazing campaign to support! Awesome haul! 6y

I really liked this! A mystery that drops you right into the middle, and you are as confused as the main character. Discovering details along with him. This one kept me page turning, kept me guessing and made little afraid of medical advancements and the drug companies.

ohyeahthatgirl Good to hear! Can't wait to read it. I really liked her other books. 7y

Was there a name, a face, a man, he could pound to death for violating his wife? No, there was just Life, which authored cruelties every day but would never sign its name to the work. He punched a wall. He broke his hand.
