The last few days I haven‘t been excited by any of the things in my TBR pile, so I turned to a “comfort author” - Martha Grimes. I pulled her very first book in the Richard Jury series off my bookshelf and settled in to get reacquainted with Jury, Melrose Plant, Agatha, Marshall, and Vivian. Let me tell you, the dialog in this book hasn‘t aged well, but it‘s been fun to revisit the start of the Jury/Plant stories.

This is a big 👍! An enjoyable mystery with an engaging main character and exceptionally witty dialogue. It‘s my first Martha Grimes, and of course the first of the Richard Jury mysteries. The first book was published in 1981 and the most recent in 2019, so it will be fun to see the series evolve.

My first book down for #DashingDecember! I‘m aiming for five books and at least one bingo.

My #Top20Series list would not be complete without Richard Jury. This was one of the first mystery series I ever got hooked on (waaaaay back in the 80s) and I read each book as soon as it came out. I haven‘t kept up as much lately but that‘s on me and not the books. Of course younger me loved the names of the pubs but I also just liked the characters and the stories. It might be time for a reread...

This took a lot longer for me to read than it should have. I liked it. The plot was intelligent and the writing was very descriptive, but just the right amount to not be boring but to pull you completely into the story. Also: I like crime stories that go on for a bit after the case is solved. So yay new series!

Because I can‘t read only nonfiction, I‘m also going to start rereading the Richard Jury series starting with the 1985 Dell paperback edition ($3.50) of the first book which teenager me bought right around that time (book was originally published in 1981). Mind. Blown. That means this book has been on my bookshelves for almost 35 years and wow, when did that happen? No way so many years have passed!

Another December and I‘m posting about this book again. I tried not to but it‘s my favourite snowy mystery. ❄️❄️❄️

Each of this series titles is the name of the pub that the murder is either linked to or that everyone frequents over the book. Heaps of gentle murdery fun 😉

Richard Jury, an inspector with Scotland Yard, and his friend Melrose Plant, a British aristocrat who assists him in his cases, are featured in this series. The titles of the novels are derived from clever names of actual pubs and bars, and in each book, both men are often seen frequenting the English pubs.

I love these Richard Jury mysteries, they‘re just so English! Each one is named after a pub and they‘re filled with manor houses and village greens and pantomimes and so on. And Richard Jury loves snow. In this first novel he leaves off detective work for a few minutes just so he can run through fresh snow with some kids ❄️❄️❄️

These guys deal in things that happen #forreasonsunknown Watching them figure it out is fun. You know Sherlock, Watson & Poirot - the other two are Peter Grant and Richard Jury from Martha Grimes great, slightly cosy, Scotland Yard series. In looking for an image of him I found that there‘s been an adaptation for German TV. 👍👍

The first Richard Jury novel is an absorbing murder mystery. I liked the characters of Jury and Plant and enjoyed the setting as much as the resolution of the various murders. I was engaged enough to order the next two books in the series!

Heard this book mentioned on #getbooked last week.

It's so delightful. I guess it's what you call a cozy mystery. Quaint English village, a cast of eccentric characters and a murder to be solved. In the pub no less! In this case the Detective isn't the hardened jaded grump - but a real sweetheart of a guy. I so enjoyed getting to know him & the village ambience just curls your toes with pleasure - will definitely read the series.
