The Big Lie
The Big Lie | Julie Mayhew

Shortlisted for the Peters Book of the Year. A shocking story of rebellion and revelation set in a contemporary Nazi England. Jessika Keller is a good girl: she obeys her father, does her best to impress Herr Fisher at the Bund Deutscher Mdel meetings and is set to be a world champion ice skater. Her neighbour Clementine is not so submissive. Outspoken and radical, Clem is delectably dangerous and rebellious. And the regime has noticed. Jess cannot keep both her perfect life and her dearest friend. But which can she live without? THE BIG LIE is a thought-provoking and beautifully told story that explores ideas of loyalty, sexuality and protest.

This book was really good for the first half. I was interested in Jess and her revolutionary friend Clementine. However, by the second half the story is told in alternating chapters of present day and flashbacks without you ever being told what is going on. True to page one, a crucial detail is missing, one you never find out so I struggled to even finish, which was a disappointment after how good the start had been.

"People who are good dont lie, but a good person might, quite reasonably, leave put something they didnt realize was really very crucial to everyone else. That isnt a lie. But, I havecome to understand, it can be as bad as telling a lie."

Continuing my alternate WW2 theme

I have decided that I must have missed something in The Big Lie. Every other person who has reviewed it on Litsy loved it...

Balibee146 Or maybe it just didn't float your boat and that's cool 👍👍🛥️ 6y

I was reluctant to review this book and give it a bad rating as I think it was a very interesting concept (the novel is set in modern day Nazi England). However I found the line of thought confusing and the different time frames were unclear (however this might just be me!) It's the sort of book that may re-read in a few months time to see if I can make more sense of as I did really want to enjoy it.

Book Haul!

6. The Big Lie by Julie Mayhew

The first line in this book is "I am a good girl"

In my opinion that is asking for trouble...

...and definitely asking for this book to be read!

This one was interesting. A dystopian/speculative fiction YA novel set in Nazi England with a queer lean. An unreliable narrator, keep going with the book as it gets really interesting in the second half.

It gets a so-so because it‘s just The Man in the High Castle but YA and set in England if the Nazis had won the war. It‘s probably a great read if you haven‘t read the previously mentioned book.
I fit another read in July 😁

KristinaRay Good to know. Thanks. 6y
2BR02B I hate when YA books recycle concepts from adult novels. Lame. 👎 6y

I am always fascinated by alternate histories. In this YA, England gets occupied by the nazis, and the story takes place to a teen in the 2000s who is living in that world. It‘s about learning who you are and how to question the world around you.

A nice bit of speculative YA fiction that imagines life in England if the Nazis had invaded and won WWII.

The Audible version of this comes out tomorrow - perfect timing since I just finished an Audible book!

I just recently heard about this from a YouTube video and it sounds so good. It is described as "a startling coming-of-age novel set in a contemporary Nazi England".
