From the rough but colorful pub that provides the books title, to the snowboard Gothic estate nearby, the chilly English landscape has never held more atmosphereor thwarted romance. And Jury will never have a more mysterious Christmas. Five Days Before Christmas: On his way to a brief holiday (he thinks) Jury meets a woman he could fall in love with. He meets her in a snow-covered graveyardnot, he thinks, the best way to begin an attachment. Four Days Before Christmas: Jury meets Father Rourke, who draws for him the semiotic squarea structure that might simplify thought, says the priest, but Jurys thoughts need more than symbols. Three Days Before Christmas: Melrose Plant, Jurys aristocratic and unofficial assistant, arrives at Spinney Abbey, now home to a well-known critic. Among the assembled snowbound guests he meetsLady Assington, Beatrice Sleight, and the painter Edward Parmenger. When they all assemble in the dining room, Lady Assington announces, I think we should have a murder.

Finished up Number 5 in my favourite cosy mystery series. Good old Richard Jury back on the case, trudging through heavy snow in the north of England around Christmas Eve, nearly falling in love with wistful women who are nearly falling in love with him. There‘s always a pub with a warm fire and a hearty meal and some local characters like Dickie and Nutter. And the aristocracy being as bitchy as hell. Made me laugh out loud at least twice 😝

Sunraven I might have to try this series ... I used to love cozies but I ran into a bunch of rather ughishly written ones and got tired of sifting. 😆 5y
Centique @Sunraven I hope you like them if you do. They‘re very atmospheric without getting twee! The first one is 5y
Sunraven And stacked! I love atmospheric, so I am tentatively hopeful. 😉 Thanks for pointing me to the first one! 5y

CarolynM Are you watching the cricket right now? We're enjoying it🙂 Go NZ! 5y
Centique @CarolynM I gave up before India started batting but it‘s looking good now! 5y
Centique @CarolynM holy heck! That was a surprise! 5y
CarolynM They were still only 4 down when we went to bed, we must have just missed the next 2 wickets. I thought India would win the tournament, but cricket is a funny game😉 5y
Centique @CarolynM good luck for tonight! A NZ AUS final would be pretty amazing. 😊🤞👏 5y
CarolynM It would be great, but I don't have much hope😬 5y
Centique @CarolynM ah bugger 😑 I think we‘re gonna get trounced by an embarrassing amount 😬 5y
CarolynM Have faith, you just never know 🍀 5y
CarolynM Oh boy! I'm so sorry, what a lousy way to lose ☹️ Can't be much satisfaction for England in winning either. 5y
Centique @CarolynM oh I know right?! Who would have thought it possible to be so close? Still it is what it is - and very proud of them for their hard work. 👍 5y

Turns out the mystery I picked up at the library is Christmas-themed (and just check out the library date card)! Richard Jury goes to the downtrodden north of England to solve a mystery the week before Christmas. Snowbound country estates, old churchyards, and pubs full of locals abound, as usual! 🌲🌲🌲🌲

RealLifeReading Haven't seen one of those cards in ages! 7y
ValerieAndBooks Wow...and the very first due date was right on my birthday 😊! 7y
[DELETED] 1409720085 I love old library cards. ❤️ So pretty. 7y
