Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light | Mort Rosenblum
4 posts | 3 read | 10 to read
A delectable journey into the world of chocolate--from manufacturing to marketing, French boutiques to American multinationals--by the award-winning author of Olives. Science, over recent years, has confirmed what chocolate lovers have always known: the stuff is actually good for you. It's the Valentine's Day drug of choice, has more antioxidants than red wine, and triggers the same brain responses as falling in love. Nothing, in the end, can stand up to chocolate as a basic fundament to human life. In this scintillating narrative, acclaimed foodie Mort Rosenblum delves into the complex world of chocolate. From the mole poblano--chile-laced chicken with chocolate--of ancient Mexico to the contemporary French chocolatiers who produce the palets d'or--bite-sized, gold-flecked bricks of dark chocolate--to the vast empires of Hershey, Godiva, and Valrhona, Rosenblum follows the chocolate trail the world over. He visits cacao plantations, meets with growers, buyers, makers, and tasters, and investigates the dark side of the chocolate trade as well as the enduring appeal of its product. Engaging, entertaining, and revealing, Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light is a fascinating foray into this "food of the gods."

Pickpick

This book takes you through the world of chocolate from its American origins to its current growth in many tropical places and its many manufacturers, focusing on the US and Europe. I enjoyed what I learned here, though it lacked narrative flow (it‘s more like a series of essays) and there‘s far too much focus on ultra high-end chocolatiers ($50+ per pound).

'I'll tell you what I want what I really, really want...' and that is chocolate. This is not book related, just a Litsy service announcement. I feel the urge to splurge on this chocolate... but I shall bide my time until Christmas, when the Costco gods look down on me in favor. 🍫🍫🤤 #Wannabe #90sInJuly

Dragon I vote for the chocolate 🍫 and Christmas 🎄 in July 😂 7y
Lizpixie When I was healthier, I used to take the train into Sydney & windowshop around the QVB, Pitt St Mall, The Strand arcade & then I'd go to David Jones, spray myself with expensive perfume and test all the really expensive moisturisers. After that I'd head down to the DJ Foodhall in their basement where it's like a premium food market. They have an oyster bar, butcher, and they also have a Godiva Chocolate store where I'd splurge on a box of truffles 7y
Lizpixie Man I loved those chocolates! I wonder if I could bribe someone to go and buy me some?🤔 Oh, and speaking of chocolate, @thegirlwiththelibrarybag that Haigs chocolate frog was A-mazing! (edited) 7y

#TBRtemptation post 4! Might as well get this sweet piece of heaven into today's posts, lol. This is an in-depth look at chocolate from a major foodie. He visits cacao plantations; meets with growers, buyers, makers, tasters; shows the history of major business empires like Hershey's & Godiva's; and looks at the dark side of this food's vast international industry. You'll really know your chocolate henceforth 😉👍🏻😋. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
