Undocumented
Undocumented: How Immigration Became Illegal | Aviva Chomsky
Explores what it means to be undocumented in a legal, social, economic and historical context In this illuminating work, immigrant rights activist Aviva Chomsky shows how illegality and undocumentedness are concepts that were created to exclude and exploit. With a focus on US policy, she probes how people, especially Mexican and Central Americans, have been assigned this statusand to what ends. Blending history with human drama, Chomsky explores what it means to be undocumented in a legal, social, economic, and historical context. The result is a powerful testament of the complex, contradictory, and ever-shifting nature of status in America. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This book taught me so much, and at the same time made me mad as hell. I had no idea that being "illegal" was a concept not created the way it's seen today until the 1960s. Chomsky (yes, she is Noam's daughter)explains so clearly how the system is rigged so that we all profit from the work of the undocumented while shaking our heads and yelling about how they're taking our jobs, when actually no one will take the jobs they do. #audiobook on#scribd

This book is making me sick to my stomach to read. It's crazy how laws were put on the books to basically allow us to legally discriminate based on where someone is from. Over half of our agriculture workers in the US are undocumented, and the agriculture industry pays big money to be able to continue using a disposable labor force. Eye-opening book. I'm listening to the #audiobook on #Scribd

This is an excellent introduction to how the concept of "illegal" immigration was constructed and the politics around it. After reading this book I went out and bought an armload of other books about immigration that I can't wait to read. Oh, this book is available on audio.

AlaMich So maybe this is a “duh” question, but is Aviva related to Noam? I mean, I‘m assuming she is... 6y
SuperPunkNinja @AlaMich Yes! She's his daughter. I had to look that up. 6y
AlaMich I was a linguistics major for a time and always have to remind myself that most people know him in a completely different context. 6y
SuperPunkNinja @AlaMich That was how I first knew him too, when I was studying psychology as an undergrad. 6y

(Instead of taking a picture of this book, I thought I'd share the sign outside of my house since it highlights a key concept in this book: no human is illegal.)

This book does a really nice job tackling the issue of immigration & putting it in a historical context & displays a lot of the implications of government policies & laws. An excellent overview for anyone wanting to understand the humanitarian issues at stake under our current system.
