“The human will is intoxicating. A man‘s soul can make him drunk. Drunkenness of this kind is known as heroism.” -Victor Hugo

Toilers of the Sea | Victor Hugo

One of my favorite books! Gilliat is a Hugo character through and through. His competence is on full display as he battles nature through his own ingenuity. Favorite quote: “Resolution puts fire in the glance: a noble fire that results from the combustion of timid thoughts.” Pure Hugo!

When I saw this recommendation on Goodreads, I definitely thought it said "Toilets of the Sea" ?? ?#IAmSecretlyFour

In all seriousness, it does sound interesting. But why do they need to specify that the translator is Scottish?!

rabbitprincess @Avanders I said this to my BF and he could immediately tell where that story was going 😂 6y

Pickpick

I may be biased since I read this book while taking an amazing four days alone in Guernsey, where this book is set and where Victor Hugo lived when he wrote it, but I absolutely loved this book! Because I was exploring the island as I read Hugo‘s descriptions, I had the most vivid pictures in my head and felt so close to the characters. Gilliatt is a beautiful character and the ending is heartbreaking and on par with a great Hardy tragedy.

starlight97 That sounds amazing! 7y
HotCocoaReads @starlight97 I can‘t believe this book isn‘t better known! 7y
