The Pure and the Impure
The Pure and the Impure | Colette
4 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
Colette herself considered The Pure and the Impure her best book, "the nearest I shall ever come to writing an autobiography." This guided tour of the erotic netherworld with which Colette was so intimately acquainted begins in the darkness and languor of a fashionable opium den. It continues as a series of unforgettable encounters with men and, especially, women whose lives have been improbably and yet permanently transfigured by the strange power of desire. Lucid and lyrical, The Pure and the Impure stands out as one of modern literature's subtlest reckonings not only with the varieties of sexual experience, but with the always unlikely nature of love.

“Voluptuaries, consumed by their senses, always begin by flinging themselves with a great display of frenzy into an abyss. But they survive, they come to the surface again. And they develop a routine of the abyss: 'It‘s four o‘clock … At five I have my abyss.'“

Remembering Colette on her birthday.

Look what arrived today, @vivastory ! My wonderful winnings from your #VivaNonfiction giveaway!

What glorious books you chose for me; one about my favourite poet and the other an NYRB book (I LOVE Colette). I think I‘ll be putting it up for the vote in our #NYRBBookclub. 😆

Thanks so much, my friend, and Happy Holidays to you. 😘😘

vivastory I'm SO happy that they arrived!! I think that Colette stands a great chance at winning the nomination. I've been meaning to read her for awhile. I'll be interested to see what you think about the Emily Dickinson book. She's a favorite. Happy Holidays, friend!🎄📚🎄📚 3y

Pickpick

Colette considered this "the nearest I shall ever come to writing an autobiography." Published in 1932 it's eroticism and discussion of desire is subtle compared to today.
