Vancouver: Wisdom Tree 3 | Nick Earls
5 posts | 1 read
Vancouver is the story Paul would tell if he were living in plague timesa story that comforts, a story that wards of evil. His story is about the giant that influenced his life, its about the day the world changed, and its about what happens when our giants come tumbling down. Think, any one of Giovanni Boccaccios stories from, Decameron. "This floored me. The format is a game changer and the linked novellas combine to create the best book Ive read in 12 years, since David Mitchells Cloud Atlas.Five complex and distinct stories set in New York, Brisbane, Vancouver, Alaska and L.A. that somehow magically meetI cant quite believe it. Earls has never had his due but if this doesnt get incredible press from here to Timbuktu, then publishing truly is broken. Or maybe he just fixed it, because Wisdom Tree is a transcendent wonder. " Chris Flynn, author of Tiger in Eden and The Glass Kingdom "Nick Earls is one of Australia's most quietly perceptive writers, and this loosely linked quintet of novellas proves just how observant he is on the ways of contemporary life. Work, family, failure and persistence are the major themes. After finishing the novellas I came away moved, contemplative and appreciative of the power of a well turned novella to convey ideas beyond its word count Unreservedly recommended." These are guide books from my honeymoon in Vancouver just before the internet became a ‘thing‘ so we had to rely on proper books!

I still like a ‘real‘ guide book though, although I also do research online - what do you prefer?

merelybookish I like books! All the online sources can overwhelm me sometimes, especially when it comes to travel! 5y
TheLudicReader I use both, but I always buy a travel guide. Love them. 5y

Sort of book related. I had to stop by the Vancouver Public Library. Didn't get the chance to really walk inside but had a quick glimpse from outside - this is a Cyclopean library! Impressive!!! 😯

BookishTrish You‘re in my neck of the woods?!? Welcome!!! 6y
thereadingowlvina @BookishTrish Haha!! Thanks! But it was a real quick trip. Just had to go to the Consulate of Malaysia for my passport (West Georgia Street). We're heading back to Calgary now 😉 6y
BookishTrish ... and Bon Voyage 😘 6y

Hey Littens, I was wondering if anyone is from the Vancouver BC area and would be interested in a meetup? Vancouverites spread the word!

Pickpick

The 3rd novella in a five book series. A loosely inter-related collection. This was a lovely tale of a friendship that spans continents and decades. A sad and heartwarming tale. The novellas are good but I think the strength of the collection is how the stories are individual yet intertwined. Beautiful all round. #australian
