Another DELICIOUS TONIGHT recipe that‘s a totally different colour from the example photo. What filter does she even use? Or are ingredients just radically different colours in Australia than they are in Canada? Here, curry powder‘s yellow and peanut butter‘s brown. They‘re the dominant ingredients in this baked chicken satay, which WAS delicious even if it was browny-yellow instead of a pretty red. (Also, I forgot the cilantro on top.)

Eggbeater That sounds delicious, no matter what color. 5d
xicanti @Eggbeater it was. I‘m looking forward to the leftovers. 5d

Next op shop was the Red Cross. This was a much better score than I usually get from there. The books were excellent. Lots of which I already own. The scrapbook supplies were super cheap and the clothes were fun. Grand total 🟰 $46.00. I didn‘t spend too much considering I downed 2 delicious margaritas at the Mexican restaurant for lunch along with 3 fish tacos beforehand.

Home Before Night | J. P. Pomare

Set in Melbourne during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, “Home Before Night” is a psychological thriller. Residents are ordered into an 8 p.m. curfew and lockdown. When single mother Lou‘s teenage son fails to return home, her anxiety escalates as his phone goes silent and his social media remains dormant. While this may not be my favorite Pomare novella, it‘s still a compelling story.

I was in the mood for some Garner, having been lucky enough to see her speak followed by Tim Winton speaking about her at a conference to honour her and her work a couple of months ago.
This 1992 novel is one of only a few of her books left for me to read. It‘s really three separate but interlinked stories.
As always her writing is exquisite. Although she is an Australian national treasure, she is only now being read more globally. #ozfiction

CarolynM It‘s great to see her getting international recognition, but it‘s a bit strange too. She‘s been such a feature of the local literary scene all my adult life, but suddenly I‘m seeing people writing/speaking about her as though she‘s new! 2w
MrsMalaprop Absolutely @CarolynM. My mum introduced me to her and The First Stone was one of my book club‘s first books in 1997. Way to get a discussion going 😬🤣. 2w

Last Thursday I couldn‘t get to work as the trains were down. It‘s never happened in my 20 years at my current job. I made it a treat myself day. First stop was the local Little Free Library. I also visited St Paul‘s Thrift Shop Stockton and Starter Stories, the yummy sourdough bakery there where I spent $60 on treats! My tummy was sore the next day after dieting for so long for my showgirl performance. It was a shame it was windy and rainy.

Somehow despite living in Australia for over a decade I was not familiar with this book. I was recently on a short trip and managed to finish the book I‘d brought along on the first night, so ducked to an op shop and found this. What a fantastic find. Interesting from a colonial history, and near history (written in 1968) perspective. Important, gripping, bloody.

danx An aboriginal man who was brought up by a Methodist minister to have white aspirations finally breaks, and the result is bloody, yet less bloody than all that is done to his people. An exploration of severed culture and insurmountable barriers and othering and the devastating results this can have. 1mo

A mother, her two daughters, and an ex-husband of one of the daughters are struggling: one coping with an end of life issue and the others dealing with an infidelity and a reckoning. I appreciated the writing and, honestly, I related strongly with all the characters. There should have been a ‘bad guy‘ but I found myself able to empathize with all of them. Not sure who decided this cover though. Thanks to @Jeg and @Centique for the recommendation.

A friend late for coffee. Held up by neighbour with all the news of our street. I call the woman The Newspaper of Egina St. Which lead me to thinking of above book. Thought I‘d read it again. It‘s a delight. Published in 1981 by our local press . This copy given to me in 1987 by partner at the start of our relationship. So has special place in my heart for many reasons. An Aussie classic for sure. ❤️

Jeg I have to add that like a few of her books it has a sinister quality. Something happens but to me it feels ok but really it‘s not. Her clever writing. 2mo
