Bailedbailed

I'm out. I tried, but I've better things to do!

The start was ok - the technology, ways of working etc. Then we got into who was spying on who, years of papertrails, and the inability to make progress on anything because leaks and urgh.

What it did show (indirectly) is the importance of diversity all the way to the top in any institution, because the small world this lot were from was so tangled/conflict of interest-y they had no hope of 👇

rockpools weeding out 'bad eggs'. Or solving any other type of problem, come to that. Also, treat your employees right, folks. Sounds like this book was a pension plan - if only they'd paid him his pension to begin with!

And banning books is a really bad idea, if you want them to sink without trace.

rockpools So now I still need a #bannedbook, banned or challenged in the UK, for #readharder. Painless suggestions welcomed! 6y
Leniverse This is so much easier for Americans where books are challenged all the time! You might find something on this list (although some of them seem to be US bans only, I did spot several U.K. Challenges): https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/sep/29/write-no-more-10-books-that-were-b... 6y

rockpools @Leniverse Thanks Leni! I'd been going round in circles with this for months. I thought I'd looked at every list on the Internet 😬but I definitely hadn't seen this - lots of earlier titles, and there are several UK-challenged in there. Think I'll go with 6y
Leniverse That list is from September, so maybe you did all your searching earlier than that? And Mary Prince seems interesting! Maybe not painless, but a different sort of pain. 6y
arlenefinnigan Yeah I ruled this out as I'd heard it was tedious. I'm reading The Well of Loneliness for this challenge (banned by Winston Churchill) - a little heavy going as it's almost unremittingly maudlin but beautifully written. 6y
rockpools @Leniverse You're probably right about the dates - & I hadn't realised UK banned books week was so new - there are plenty of other ideas from the linked articles at the bottom ofthere as well! Looking forward to this one now, though. 6y
rockpools @arlenefinnigan It lulled me into a false sense of security - the start was actually amusing in places. But tedious pretty much sums it up. I've downloaded TWOL for a later date, but can't do 450pp of unremitting maudlin right now. How's the rest of your challenge? You nearly there? 6y
arlenefinnigan @RachelO got three to finish - already reading TWOL for banned book and The Grapes Of Wrath for book published between 1900 and 1950. Gonna read Forgotten by Linda Hervieux for the book about war. How many you got left? 6y
rockpools @arlenefinnigan Forgotten sounds good! 2 left now - 3rd attempt at this category, hopefully Mary Prince, with Melvyn Burgess's Junk or Lady Chatterley on standby. Then NF Technology-prob Adventures in the Anthropocene, tho' it'll be my 3rd attempt at that too! Totally doable 😬. Good luck! 6y

If it wasn't for #readharder #bannedbook, I would totally have bailed by now. The amount of time these guys spent investigating each other is something else. 🙄😖😩😴.

A very long 170pp to go...

TrishB Better than me! Would definitely have bailed. 6y
rockpools @TrishB I'm so close to finishing the challenge! I'm also contemplating Lady Chatterley! 6y

I still have 200 pages to go 😕

Things I have learned:
1. All the security services were quite inept for quite a long time.
2. Once, someone who'd been to a state school worked for MI5.
3. The author had all the answers, if only people had listened. Still, at least he was single-handedly responsible for any successes/improvements that were made. 🙄

It was moderately entertaining to begin with, but now it's both dry & cringe-inducing.

TrishB Number 2 😂 shocking! 6y
rockpools @TrishB In this chapter, he's sharing an office with a Woman that Knows Things. Whoever heard the like?! 6y
TrishB 😂😂I suspect it‘s not supposed to be funny!! Pompous? 6y
rockpools @TrishB He has quite a high opinion of himself! But I think it's genuine surprise that anyone outside of this incredibly narrow male upper-class public-school-educated world they live in might actually have any useful input to anything. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
TrishB An opinion that still pervades sadly. 6y

British Intelligence services, 1950s style.

You know those Pink Panther cartoon episodes, where he dresses up as a painter& decorator or telephone engineer, to get into a building ? All of that!

Here goes nothing. #lowexpectations #bannedbooks

cathysaid Looking forward to your thoughts on this one 🤔 7y
rockpools @cathysaid I'm not sure if I'm expecting incredibly dry or purposefully scandalous. But I reckon he might just pull off both! 7y

Has anyone actually read Spycatcher?

These 3 are potential reads for #readharder (book banned/challenged in your country) which were #controversial in their time. Spycatcher was the most recent book to be banned in the UK back in the late 80s. And that went well! I think it's the type of book most likely to stir up a controversy here now.

But I'm sure the others would be a much better read... Advice welcomed!
