Fiction. "Who is Nell Zink? She claims to be an expatriate living in northeast Germany. Maybe she is; maybe she isn't. I don't know. I do know that this first novel arrives with a voice that is fully formed: mature, hilarious, terrifyingly intelligent, and wicked. The novel is about a bird-loving American couple that moves to Europe and becomes, basically, eco-terrorists. This is strange, and interesting, but in between is some writing about marriage, love, fidelity, Europe, and saving the earth that is as funny and as grown-up as anything I've read in years. And there are some jokes in here that a young Don DeLillo would kill to have written. I hope he doesn't kill Nell Zink." Keith Gessen "Nell Zink is a writer of extraordinary talent and range. Her work insistently raises the possibility that the world is larger and stranger than the world you think you know. You might not want to believe this, but her sentences and stories are so strong and convincing that you'll have no choice." Jonathan Franzen"

Mehso-so

Not the best book I‘ve read but still funny and a quick read. Hard to care when Zink makes the characters so unlikable, flawed and morally ambiguous. But the metaphors of marriage and the eco-terrorism twist made it absurd enough to have some enjoyment

Bailedbailed

Maybe I have read too many books on marriages and adultery lately, in any case I was not a bit interested in the loveless relationship of two young Americans living in Switzerland. They both go their own way and talk about birds and electronic music. That is, until I decided I didn‘t care for them at all and got rid of the book.

MayJasper The power of the reader ❣ 6y
BarbaraBB @MayJasper Haha, yes, bailing can feel so good 😉 6y
Cinfhen I tried a different book by this author and bailed pretty early into it! I don‘t care for tone 6y

Mdargusch Time to move on! 👉🏼 6y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I read that one too and didn‘t care for it much. But a good friend of mine loves Nell Zink so I thought I should try again. But now I am giving up on her! 6y
emilyhaldi Sounds similar to Haufstrau but not as good obviously 🙃 6y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi Yeah, Switzerland again! But Hausfrau is much better! 6y
Taylor I loooove Nell Zink. 6y
BarbaraBB @Taylor i am sorry that I don‘t... which one is your favorite? (edited) 6y
Taylor @Barbara4 My favorite is “Nicotine” but I‘m not sure you‘d like it any better than the others. I guess I don‘t think you would. (edited) 6y

#Thehoneymoonisover for Tiff and Stephen following their miscarriage. The couple's subsequent flight from the U.S to Berne mirrors the flight of the injured Wallcreeper, a fleeing from captivity into the wilderness beyond.
The Wallcreeper is a funny little novel. Not the greatest but an interesting short read.

Cinfhen I read another book by this author which was also strange 7y

Bailedbailed

Described as hilarious and intelligent, I guess I was struggling to find the humor of a woman almost bleeding to death from a miscarriage after a car accident caused by a birdseeking husband. So funny? Not to anyone who has ever had one.

Ashley_Nicoletto Whyyyyy would anyone market that as funny? 😫🙈 7y
Cinfhen OMG! That sounds horribly insensitive, even if you haven‘t experienced miscarriage (which I have). I‘m sorry you had to confront that topic in a novel meant to be humorous 😔 7y
EchoLogical Yeah, I would've bailed on this, too. Thanks for the heads up. 7y

ReadingEnvy @Ashley_Nicoletto And I suppose some might see it as funny? The husband, so clueless! Just no. 7y
ReadingEnvy @Cinfhen yeah, I'm not sure what the author was doing but I can't think she has been through one or she wouldn't do that! 7y
ReadingEnvy @EchoLogical I'm not always sure what I think of trigger warnings but in this case it would have helped me decide to never even try it. 7y
saresmoore Ugh. 7y
cariashley This book was disappointing overall... 7y
Susanita Fun fact: I knew the author in college-not well but well enough. When I heard some bookriot podcasters talking about her, I nearly drove off the road! 7y
quietlycuriouskate Whaaat?! Don't you wish sometimes that Litsy had an "I will never read this" button? 7y
ReadingEnvy @Susanita I've always felt I'm just not cool enough to appreciate her writing. Does she feel like that in person? 7y
Susanita We had some friends in common and had a class together, but we only had maybe one or two conversations. She struck me as excruciatingly quirky and not terribly concerned with following rules. 7y

Casually original and razor-sharp voice driven. Many times I laughed out loud in public. I even prefer this to Zink's novel Mislaid, as this ends as strong as it opens.

Xxxxx I liked the first 50 pages and loathed the rest. Maybe I'll try "Mislaid" at some point. She's interesting. 8y
Taylor @jonbartlett I've become a major Nell Zink fan. (edited) 8y

one of the weirdest books I've read this year. i found the characters universally unlikeable, although they seem to do a lot of the right things... for very selfish reasons. Still, it's occasionally very funny and truthful

These are a few of my favorite things. Loved Mislaid and currently on Wallcreeper. Nell Zink has such a great, funny writing style. I can't get enough of it.

There was humor and general weirdness/quirks to the characters. I liked the first half of the the book (Berne) but once they get to Berlin I thought it got kind of flat. I'll read her other work but it was somewhat reminiscent of Miranda July but without quite the quality I found so enjoyable in July's stories.

Holy cow was this book hilarious. I picked this up on the recommendation from a friend of a friend, and I'm so glad I did. Lots of dark humor and a few dashes of cynicism make up the funniest book I've read in months.

It's been a long time since I've been so simultaneously enamored with and demoralized by the intelligence and candor of a narrator's voice. I'm looking forward to reading every word Nell Zink writes.

Kenny Love this book. Love all her books. 8y

Stephen possesses the indefinable divine spark that arises from friction between an infinitely complex universe and the unfathomable enigma of subjectivity. (Later on the same page) There's more real art going on in one square inch of Midwest than in all of New York City.
