Every time I read a book by Mosher I love Vermont even more. His books take place in the Northeast Kingdom and his characters & the situations they find themselves in feel both universal and distinctly connected to Vermont. This story is about Jim Kinneson and his growth from teens to college-bound. Jim‘s ancestry is drawn with such precision-from abolitionists, baseball fans, union organizers, to woodsmen-that it‘s easy to grow close to them.

“An easy rain overnight had given the few remaining pastures the emerald sheen you will see in the spring in the countryside of Ireland and of Kingdom County [in Vermont] and nowhere else.”

One of these photos was taken in Vermont and one in Ireland. I‘ve always said they are so similar it‘s kind of spooky. Vermont just needs an ocean.

This Vermont author won many awards throughout his career. He was beloved by Vermonters. His novels took place in the Northeast Kingdom, a rugged area of the state, alongside the Canadian border, where I live. His characters, always memorable, often were involved in smuggling, survival, and justice. Humor was always mixed in. He died in 2017 and I have always loved the chapel where his service was held. Check his writing out sometime!

I was surprised by how few people have written posts about this author and his books. He is a wonderful writer. For those of you who have enjoyed his writing, I thought I'd share that he is now in hospice care for an untreatable and aggressive cancer. He is on Facebook if you want to write to him.

So excited to receive my first paperback fiction package from Book Culture Selects! The book sounds amazing and, even better, is by an unfamiliar author. This might just be the best Christmas present ever... can't wait to start reading! 😃📚
