Death of a Ghost
Death of a Ghost | M. C. Beaton
14 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
There are many ruined castles in Scotland. One such lies outside the village of Drim. Hamish begins to hear reports that this castle is haunted and lights have been seen there at night, but he assumes it's some children or maybe the local lads going there to smoke pot, or, worse, inject themselves with drugs. Hamish says to his policeman, Charlie 'Clumsy' Carson, that they will both spend a night there. The keening wind explains the ghostly noises, but when Charlie falls through the floor, Hamish finds the body of a dead man propped up in a corner of the cellar. After Charlie is airlifted to the hospital, Chief Detective Inspector Blair arrives to investigate the body, but there is none to be found. Dismissed as a drunk making up stories, Hamish has to find and identify the body and its killer before the "ghost" can strike again.

Another excellent book in the Hamish MacBeth series, book no 32, these are always fun and enjoyable reads. Interesting developments in this book after the murders are solved. Should be good to see where this is taken next. Unfortunately the next one will be the last book in the series written by M C Beaton before her death. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView

Clwojick We‘ll done! 🎉🙌🏻 2y
Andrew65 @Clwojick Thanks 😍 (edited) 2y
TheSpineView Great job! Though I hate it when a good series comes to an end. 2y

Andrew65 @TheSpineView Me too, sometimes drag my feet on some series for this reason. 2y
JohnLAndBenji Is this related to shakespeare‘s macbeth or is this different? 2y
Andrew65 @JohnLAndBenji No it‘s doesn‘t have any relation to Shakespeare 2y

Making progress on the Hamish MacBeth Series, which I am now on book 32, and only 2 more written by M C Beaton before she died. Will be interested to read on to the two books written by R W Green in the series. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView

Clwojick Good for you for sticking with such a long series. I find it takes a great author to keep one going for son long without it feeling repetitive or boring. So far the most I‘ve read in a single series Is 11 books. Hopefully that‘ll change this year, thanks to #SeriesLove2023. 😊 2y
Read-y_Picker I was looking at this series, as my library has them available in French and I figured they'd be a pretty easy read. I guess having read up to #32 you'd recommend? 2y
Andrew65 @Read-y_Picker They are fun cosy reads, with a laid back policeman in a remote part of the highlands of Scotland who has no luck with women. Always very enjoyable and grist to spend time with him. Quite short reads too. Always enjoyed them. Robert Carlyle actually played him in a tv series from early in his reads too. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111993/ 2y

Andrew65 @Clwojick I‘ve read a few long series that I‘ve enjoyed. They can be a bit samey these ones, but usually space them months apart and isn‘t an issue, sometimes good to get back to favourites. 2y
TheSpineView Wow! Book 32! That's a lot of books for a series! I'm impressed that you have read that far. 2y
Andrew65 @TheSpineView Just checked, taken me almost 10 years, I finished the first one on 29th July 2013 2y

Only have one more to go now until I'm up to date with the Hamish Macbeth murder mysteries! 😍
Another brilliant piece of work! Looks as though Hamish and Elspeth may rekindle things? 🤞 I didn't expect it to take the turn it did regarding who the murderer was though! Usually the murderer is in the story early on but it wasn't the case with this story! Lovely read though, great plot and always a few laughs in the story that lighten it up a bit! ☺

Can you believe Death of a Ghost is the 32nd Hamish Macbeth mystery?! The stories are becoming more & more silly, but I still read them all

While this installment of the Hamish Macbeth series was not as strong as others in the series, and there were a few sections that seemed disjointed, I still enjoyed reading Hamish's escapade into murder and mayhem.

BethFishReads Ohhhh I love the Hamish Macbeth books. A lot of fun. I've been reading them from the beginning 8y
candc320 Oh, really @BethFishReads ?! I need a book with lots of fun so this sounds perfect!! Hopefully I won't feel too far behind having not read the earlier books in the series. 8y
BethFishReads They are very light, escapist reading. Nothing complex or heavy -- just fun characters 8y

Just found out the pub date on this is February 21st. If anything can make an Canadian February less dreary it is a new Hamish Macbeth book. If you like cozy mysteries and haven't heard of this series please let me know if the comments and I'll recommend one for you to start with. Or just start at the beginning and enjoy the ride. Set in the Scottish Highlands. You get used to Hamish's name, don't worry.

minkyb I'm very excited! I definitely will start at the beginning! 8y
KendallMorganHall @minkyb - That is what I told my aunt to do and now she is hooked. She is as excited as I am that the new one is coming out! 8y
