A story about what it means to be a friend Five women, best friends for decades, meet once a month to talk about books and life, love and the jagged bits in between. Dissecting each others lives seems the most natural thing in the world and honesty, no matter how brutal, is something they treasure. Best friends tell each other everything, dont they? But each woman harbours a complex secret and one weekend, without warning, everything comes unstuck. Izzy, soon to be the first Black woman with her own television show, has to make a decision that will change everything. Veronica, recently divorced and dedicated to raising the best sons in the world, has forgotten who she is. Xanthe, desperate for a baby, can think of nothing else, even at the expense of her marriage. Nadine, so successful at writing other peoples stories, is determined to blot out her own. Ellen, footloose by choice, begins to question all that shes fought for. When their circle begins to fracture and the old childhood ways dont work anymore, is their sense of sistahood enough to keep it intact? How well do these tiddas really know each other? Generous and witty: only Anita Heiss is writing this new, contemporary womens story. - Susan Johnson

Tidda is an Aboriginal word, meaning sister or best friend and this book follows 5 women (3 of whom are Aboriginal) who have been close friends for years. They all lead very different lives but their book club draws them together and we see how they navigate their friendship as they reach their forties.

If you‘re a fan of Liane Moriarty or Taylor Jenkins Reid I think you‘ll like this.

Thanks @LeeRHarry for putting this on your #nywd list.

squirrelbrain I only have one gripe; some of the writing was a bit clunky when explaining things. I probably didn‘t notice with the Aboriginal culture as that is all new to me, but descriptions of everything from epidurals to Wagon Wheel biscuits were shoe-horned in, in a rather obvious (dare I say patronising?!) way. Also, spoiler below ⬇️ 2y
squirrelbrain What on earth happened with the end of Xanthe‘s story?! Such a shame to leave it at that stage…. 2y
monalyisha I want to read the spoiler but I won‘t. 😅 My need to have ALL OF THE INFORMATION is very much at odds with my utter abhorrence of spoilers right now. 😂 2y
squirrelbrain Actually it‘s not that spoiler-y @monalyisha , now that I think about it, but still try to ignore it! 2y

Day 4 of #riotgrams and I have a few #purple books...

GlassAsDiamonds Nostradamus Ate my Hamster? Okay, need to check that out immediately! 😂😂😂 6y
Sue @GlassAsDiamonds Robert Rankin has some amazing titles. His writing is something like a mix of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. 😊 6y

This was an absolute delight. Fair warning, this is a character driven book, focussed on the Tiddas and their relationships (mainly with each other). (Why do people freak out when there's not a roller coaster of a plot?) As I mentioned in my previous post, there are lots of great book suggestions and also references to other artists and associations around the place.

Sace Sometimes plot roller coasters are fun, but I agree sometimes it's the books "without" a plot I enjoy the most. I'm more of a lazy inner tube down the river kind of gal anyway. 7y
Sue @Sace Love it! 😂 7y

I've started on this one today. Set locally, I'm loving that it's drawing out my favourite places in Brisbane as well as the wonderful reading recommendations scattered throughout.

LeeRHarry I bought this a few weeks ago so I'll be interested to hear your thoughts 😊 7y
Sue @LeeRHarry I really enjoyed it! I hope you do too :) 7y

This is a great starter list of books by Australian authors of colour, and I knew my Littens would be interested in reading it (and checking out some of the books too!)

Foxyfictionista Thank you for this! I've added quite a few of these to my goodreads list. 7y
mischa @foxyfictionista May I also recommend? 7y
Foxyfictionista @mischa Added. Thank you! I've not read anything by or about Australia's indiginous people yet so it's a really good way to expand my horizons. 7y
MrsMalaprop Thanks. I have read a couple of Anita Heiss's books including Am I Black Enough For You, which is worth a read. 7y
mischa @Foxyfictionista You are very welcome! @SMW That was my first Anita Heiss! 7y
