When the Women Come Out to Dance
When the Women Come Out to Dance: Stories | Elmore Leonard
9 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
In his more than three dozen books, Elmore Leonard has captured the imagination of millions of readers as few writers can. A literary icon praised by The New York Times Book Review as "the greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever," he has influenced many contemporary writers and is known for both the quality and the accessibility of his writing. In this collection of new and recently published short fiction, Leonard demonstrates the superb characterizations, dead-on dialogue, vivid atmosphere, and driving plotting that have made him a household name. And once more this master of crime illustrates that the line between the law and the lawbreakers is not as firm as we might think. Federal marshal Karen Sisco, from the bestselling novel Out of Sight, returns in "Karen Makes Out," once again inadvertently mixing pleasure with business. In "Fire in the Hole," Raylan Givens, last seen in Riding the Rap and Pronto, meets up with an old friend, but they're now on different sides of the law. In the title story, "When the Women Come Out to Dance," Mrs. Mahmood gets more than she bargains for when she conspires with her maid to end her unhappy marriage. In all nine stories -- each unique in their own right -- reluctant heroes and laid-back lowlifes struggle for power, survival, and their fifteen minutes of fame. Vivid, hilarious, and unfailingly human, these stories ring true with Elmore Leonard's signature deadpan social observations and diabolical eye for the foibles of the good guys and the bad.

If you‘ve seen the show “Justified” on FX this book includes the novella “Fire in the Hole” which inspired the show. The book also include several other short stories and another Novella. Couldn‘t get in to many of the others. I liked “Fire in the Hole” and loved the show.

Blueberry I loved Justified!! 4y

Pretty good...my first Leonard. How does someone write almost no detail or description and yet the world is so vivid? (Dialogue. The answer is dialogue.)

“Justified” was my favorite television series of the past decade. The story it‘s based on, by the same name as this book, is amazing, though that isn‘t the only reason why I liked this collection. Leonard was a genius, and his short stories always demonstrate that.

Ericalambbrown Oooohhh! I haven‘t read this one. I absolutely loved Justified. I‘ll have to find this. 5y

I always come home to the old holler of Harlan, Kentucky when I need a good, old-fashioned dose of a world where one thing is certain: justice will be delivered by a quick draw, and acknowledged with a toast of good bourbon or 'shine.

Raising a glass tonight to Elmore Leonard and his unparalleled mastery, just because I can.

Decided to start a re-watch of the final season of Justified, the excellent series based on Elmore Leonard's short story Fire In The Hole and featuring his character Raylan Givens from that story and three novels.

LeahBergen I love this series. I think I'm only on season 4? 7y
Anton @LeahBergen Season 4 is great! Season 5 wasn't as good, but season 6 ends the series on a high note. 7y
