Carter & Lovecraft
Carter & Lovecraft | Jonathan L. Howard
From author Jonathan L. Howard comes the start of a thrilling supernatural series that brings the H.P. Lovecraft mythos into the twenty-first century, optioned by Warner Bros TV. Daniel Carter used to be a homicide detective, but his last case -- the hunt for a serial killer -- went wrong in strange ways and soured the job for him. Now he's a private investigator trying to live a quiet life. Strangeness, however, has not finished with him. First he inherits a bookstore in Providence from someone he's never heard of, along with an indignant bookseller who doesn't want a new boss. She's Emily Lovecraft, the last known descendant of H.P. Lovecraft, the writer from Providence who told tales of the Great Old Ones and the Elder Gods, creatures and entities beyond the understanding of man. Then people start dying in impossible ways, and while Carter doesn't want to be involved, but he's beginning to suspect that someone else wants him to be. As he reluctantly investigates, he discovers that Lovecraft's tales were more than just fiction, and he must accept another unexpected, and far more unwanted inheritance.

Read once, listened to on Hoopla twice. Look, I never really got into the whole HPL science beyond Wikipedia-ing the plots and other elements. But the reimagined scenario within Carter & Lovecraft is beyond fun. The dialogue (internal and external) acts as ‘reality‘, with characters as individuals. It‘s sardonic and easy to put together (as much as one can with cosmic horror and rare book sellers)-even if you associate HPL with cringe.

it was intriguing and well written. my only problem was the mathematics. I was very confused with that and so i couldn't fallow the story. but i believe some one could definitely enjoy it.

I loved how Howard was able to combine multiple stories from Lovecraft seamlessly into a creepy, and fascinating story. Popsugar prompt: book worth under 1k reviews.

Still on a sci-fi kick but this time with a detective series with Lovecraftian crimes. I am not big on detective stories but I did like the Lovecraft descendant bookseller. #sciencefiction #atozchallene #audiobook

What if everything HP Lovecraft wrote about was true?

This was a great book. It really evoked the feeling of H. P. Lovecraft's works while being an original story. The bookstore setting and the reluctant partnership were great elements. Carter is a Private Investigator involved in a case with Lovecraftian elements. Emily Lovecraft is the bookstore employee who becomes his partner. I enjoyed this very much 😄

elkeOriginal @WhatDeeReads It's Cthulhu - not that I can now say what he is. I just recognize him from life! It's a Lovecraft creation. 7y

This is a great underrated book that knows how to blend horror and crime fiction together. Fans of Lovecraft's work will love it and even if you're not, this story will pull you in. Looking forward to the sequel this year.

I'll admit I've never read an original Lovecraft story so I went into this without any bias for or against. What I found was a definite nod to the hard-boiled noir set with a sci-fi twist. Great characters, creepy atmosphere, and definitely enough mystery to keep you turning pages 'til the end. Looking forward to seeing how that ending is spun in the next book!

Cthulu approves this modern noir reinterpretation of HP Lovecraft's weird, otherworldly mythos.

catsuit_mango I've got the same plush Cthulhu, I probably need to read this story ;) 7y
