Fans of Kate DiCamillo's Flora & Ulysses and Katherine Applegate's Crenshaw will fall in love with this charming adventure story about a girl learning to accept her new life, her quirky detective neighbor, and their epic search for Bigfoot. Lemonade Liberty Witt's mama always told her: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But Lem can't possibly make lemonade out of her new life in Willow Creek, California--the Bigfoot Capital of the World--where she's forced to live with a grandfather she's never met after her mother passes away. Then she meets eleven-year-old Tobin Sky, the CEO of Bigfoot Detectives Inc., who is the sole Bigfoot investigator for their small town. After he invites Lem to be his assistant for the summer, they set out on an epic adventure to capture a shot of the elusive beast on film. But along the way, Lem and Tobin end up discovering more than they ever could have imagined. And Lem realizes that maybe she can make lemonade out of her new life after all.

Set in the immediate post-Vietnam era, an orphaned young girl struggling to deal with her grief is sent to live with her Grandfather in Bigfoot country. Grief, abandonment, bullying, and PTSD are all a major part of this story that still manages to be sweet and gentle.

🍋 We‘ve all heard the saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” That is exactly what Lemonade Liberty Witt‘s mother always told her. Melissa Savage‘s HF book, Lemons, follows the life of Lemonade, or Lem for short, after her mother dies and she has to move to Willow Creek with her Grandfather who she has never met. She meets Tobin Sky, the next door neighbor who is also the CEO of Bigfoot Detectives Inc... #LAE3414sp19

ha_kaye and they quickly become friends. The town of Willow Creek has a big fascination with Bigfoot, they even have a “gargantuan wooden stature” in the heart of town. It is set in the mid-70s, during the aftermath of the Vietnam war. Throughout Lemons, there are many life lessons that come about such as loss and friendship. This would make a great IR or LC. It is one of the 2018-2019 Sunshine State Young Readers Award Books. 6y

ha_kaye UDL principle 9.2, facilitate personal coping skills and strategies, would work well when discussing topics like loss of family members. EL strategy #4 would be crucial for comprehension since the story is set in the past and students need to understand the time period before reading the book. 6y

kennedimartin I really enjoyed reading your review of this book and it makes me want to read it!! I like that you included that it‘s a SSYRA book! Thanks for sharing :) 6y
gnewman @haleykaye517 your explanation of the book really drew me in! I love that you added the little lemon emoji in the beginning too! Nice touch! Also, I thought the UDL Principle and ESOL Strategy that you chose were perfect for the book! I feel like they align really well! 6y
kkimmelman Love your opening about “when life gives you lemons”! Really caught my attention! This seems like a great book for an IR or even a LC just like you said. 6y
ha_kaye Thank you all! I definitely recommend giving it a read (; @kkimmelman @gnewman @kennedimartin 6y

A girl who recently lost her mother moves to a town joins a Big Foot Detective Agency rum by a quirky fifth grader. Major DiCamillo vibes here—it‘s a winner!

I loved this book! Likable characters and fun adventures as they search for Bigfoot in their town. The characters aren't without issues and I liked how the lessons they learned were interspersed throughout the story instead of saved up until the end. Perfect book for upper elementary and middle school students.

A quick one-evening read. A middle grade fiction about coping with the loss of an immediate family member (sometimes, the only one). Lemonade loses her mom to cancer and is forced to move in with a grandfather she never existed. Worse, she's made to move from San Francisco to a small town only famous for its one Bigfoot sighting. This is a cute little story about how the town comes together to help her get over her loss.

This came in the mail today. Middle grade fiction with a cover like that - I definitely expected it to be a light quick read. I'm halfway through the book and I've already cried twice! It's about losing someone you really care about very early in life. And how to deal with it..

BestOfFates That is a very misleading cover re: tone! 8y
ramyasbookshelf @BestOfFates well, there's a side element to the whole grieving thing about moving on with life. The kid finds a friend who is a Bigfoot detective and their hunts and expeditions are fun almost therapeutic for her.. the cover suits that part of the story. 8y
