This SF novel is the last in the Hunger Games series. The book continues the story of Katniss Everdeen, who agrees to unify the districts of Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical Capitol. This book could be beneficial if used as a LC. UDL 5.1 could be used if lit circles were to go digital! ESOL 10 could be used in lit circles.

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs is a new take on the fairy-tale classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears, so funny and so original. This TL could be used as a DR and would be so fun! UDL 1.1 is a great way to customize the display of this text. This F picture book is about a little girl who rescues a strange beast in the woods and carries him home, but the beast escapes! This book is a funny and charming tale about seeing both sides of the story that could be used as S. UDL 7.3 could be used to ensure students have their focus on the book. ESOL 4 could be used if students are asked about their experience of seeing different perspectives.

This B Caldecott winning picture book employs the artist's lens to give us an extraordinary view of the life of Galileo Galilei. The author tells his story in language as simple as a fairy tale, in pictures as rich and tightly woven as a tapestry, and in Galileo's own words, written more than 350 years ago and still resonant with truth. This could be used well an AS and with UDL 3.3 and ESOL 29.

This F Caldecott winner puts kids in the driver's seat, letting them decide the difference between right and wrong. Mo Willems creates a fun story that could be used as RT if a student were to act as the pigeon and another acted as the bus driver. UDL 1.1 and 1.3 could be used to tie in RT. ESOL 17 in regards to body language and visuals would also tie in well.

This P book is a collection of poems written by Shel Silverstein. These could be used as CR or DR depending on the poem chosen within the book. UDL 5.3 would be important since poems focus upon fluency. ESOL 14 may also be important when reading poetry and practicing fluency. This SF novel is set in a futuristic, dystopian Chicago, society is organized into five factions. Each faction places value solely on a specific virtue, which its members work to cultivate throughout their lives. There is Abnegation,Amity,Erudite,Candor,and Dauntless. Children are raised in their parents' faction, and once they turn sixteen, they have the option to choose for themselves which faction will be theirs for the rest of their lives.

This P Newbery winner is a collection of 14 children's poems about insects such as mayflies, lice, and honeybees. The concept is unusual in that the poems are intended to be read aloud by two people. As such,this could be used as CR within the classroom. UDL 5.3 is an obvious choice when it comes to CR since it builds upon fluency. ESOL 14, 16, and 34 would all tie in nicely together when using this strategy.

This F Caldecott winner is a great addition to any classroom as an IR. Inspired by the true story of a gorilla who spent 30 years alone in a cage at an indoor zoo in a mall, this beautiful book imagines what that gorilla might have felt and said about his life. These unforgettable characters overflow with pain and love in an ultimately hopeful story about the healing power of art. UDL9.1 would work well to set expectations for independent reading.

This NF Pura Belpre winner makes excellent use of picture-book storytelling to bring attention to the 1947 California ruling against public-school segregation. The concise, informative text discusses how being banned from enrolling in an Orange County grade school because of her skin tone and Mexican surname inspired Sylvia Mendez‘ family to fight for integrated schools. UDL 2.4 would be fitting, as this text is translated to Spanish.

This B picture book is a Caldecott award winner. This book is an excellent and accessible introduction for young readers to learn about one of the world's most influential leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr— it could be used as an AS for young readers. UDL 3.1 and 3.2 would tie in well with the AS as well as ESOL 42 and 43.

This Newbery winning SF novel is about a boy named Jonas who lives a so-called perfect world where everything is controlled by strict rules. This novel questions what is right or wrong for society, and how differences and choices make life good. Jonas is assigned to an important position in the community and is the only one who learns the truth about the past. This book would work well as an IR.

ESOL 6 would pair well with this UDL in order to be sure students are comprehending the symbols and meanings written. In this TL Caldecott winning picture book a woman catches a fox drinking her glass of milk and cuts off his tail. The fox begs her for his tail back, and she agrees to return it if the fox replaces the milk he stole. The fox approaches a series of other animals and people, each of whom wants something in return for their help. After fulfilling everybody's needs, the woman sews the fox's tail back onto him.

This HF novel is a Newbery award winner written by Lois Lowry. Told from the point of view of a young girl, readers will experience the hardships of growing up in the time during the Holocaust. This book could be used for a PR or book club to encourage students to read independently and build community. Edenmonet I remember reading this book in middle school and really liking it. I feel it‘s so important for students to read about difficult times in history, such as the Holocaust. This book could be read around the time of a history unit on WW2. 5y

Author and illustrator Jan Brett's love of folk and fairy tales is apparent in this beautifully illustrated picture book for little readers. Having carefully researched this Ukrainian tale, she renders each picture with true authenticity. This TL picture book will evoke warm and cozy feelings in readers any time of the year. Perfect to share with little ones, the simplicity of the story shines bright. This is used well as a SR.

This RF NY Times Best Seller is easily a tear jerker. The theme of the book is implicit and is that everyone has a right to be respected and loved for who they are. Throughout the book Melody hopes for a better life where people treat her with respect and don't treat her like she is stupid. She wants "normal" friends with whom she can communicate. She struggles to be herself and stay positive in spite of her disability.This book is great for LC.

Bud, Not Buddy is a HF children's novel written by Christopher Paul Curtis. The book received the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature. This book tells the story of a 10 y/o African American boy and his quest to find his father during the Great Depression. The novel begins in Flint, Michigan, at “the Home,” where Bud and other orphaned children wait to be placed into foster care. This will be Bud's third foster family.

kkimmelman I would use this book for a LC group. I would recommend the UDL 5.1 and 5.2 strategies in order to promote communication within the groups. I also would recommend ESOL 16 would be beneficial in order to promote a variety of learning within groups: speaking, listening, and writing. This RF picture book written by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson is rightfully awarded the Newbery Medal and Caldecott Honor awards. Any educator should consider adding this high quality book to their classroom libraries. With developmentally appropriate language, this book would be excellent as a RA in the elementary setting. This book teaches the lesson of being grateful for what you have and seeing the beauty in all things.

kkimmelman The UDL strategies 2.1 and 2.3 would be appropriate to support the high quality thinking and clarification of comprehension during a read aloud. ESOL strategy 1 regarding questioning for clarification is also useful in that it promotes students looking deeper into the text. 5y

This F novel creates adventure for readers. Jack and Annie are off on another mission for Merlin; luckily, they have Teddy to help. From underwater caves to mystical selkies, students will love to read this. This book would be best as IR. ESOL 42 and 44 could be beneficial in that timelines and thinking skills could be used to show deeper understanding. The UDL principals 3.3 and 3.4 regarding comprehension would be appropriate for this read.
