13 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
Fortysomething divorced taxidermist Romie Futch becomes a research subject at the Center for Cybernetic Neuroscience, where "scientists" download humanities disciplines into his brain. With his new and improved brain Romie hopes to reclaim his marriage, revolutionize his life, and revive his artistic aspirations, but ends up getting mixed up in the absurd and murky underworld of biotech operatives, FDA agents, and environmental activists.

To me, Romie Futch is entirely unlikeable. And it is incredibly hard to get past a slow plot line when you don‘t even like the characters. If I didn‘t have to read this for a class I would have bailed on it because I have too many books to read in my life to wait on a book to get interesting. Plus, the ending wasn‘t even satisfying. I appreciate the writing style but hate the story itself.

This bizarre and wonderful book fulfilled my "located within 100 miles" prompt for the #readharder challenge. Super-strange and mesmerizing, definitely recommend.

ReadingEnvy I loved her short stories 7y

Flowers for Algernon via Moby Dick and Palmer Eldritch, whilst still being very original. And great cover. #themonster #lyricalapril @Cinfhen

Cinfhen That's quite a mashup of classics....cool cover 🐉😍 8y

"I e-mailed all my clients a twenty-percent-off coupon.
Diverted all thoughts of Helen.
Thwarted all invitations to binge drink with Lee and Chip.
Allowed myself only brief, utilitarian forays into the labyrinth of Internet porn.
Delighted in the shrinkage of my potbelly.
Took pleasure in the flexing of new muscle tone.
Snacked on baby carrots.
Learned to appreciate the slow crawl of the sun over my patio as I gingerly sipped a Miller Light"

Jess_Read_This #lyricalapril #themonster #southernliterature #monsteronthecover -chosen for the monster breathing fire on the cover- Elliot has such a way with words! I was fortunate to attend a reading she did of this book. She's utterly witty. (edited) 8y
Cinfhen Great cover...and the first "Monster" monster of the day... 8y
Jess_Read_This @Cinfhen Yay!! I was having a little trouble with this one. 8y
Oryx Just posted this one too 😀 8y
Jess_Read_This @Oryx 💕💕 It's truly an original work! I met her at a Savannah literary reading and she was brilliant. I loved how she opened the book and chose a random quote to include in her signing. She said she does this sort of like opening a Bible and letting a verse speak to you. 8y

A new favourite. I want to consume everything Julia Elliott has and ever will write.
This book is strange & hard to explain. The beginning half reminds me of Flowers for Algernon (another of my favourites) & then it continues in a direction I wasn't expecting nor could I have predicted. This is a really unique & well written story.

#recommendsday : My father-in-law lent this to me. He knew I would love it, and I did! Fresh, funny, clever, weird. It's got rednecks & human experiments & mutant pigs & art shows & hilariously heart wrenching characters. Read it!

Not what I was expecting, but still pretty great. A really compelling ride from beginning to end. Weird, fabulist, and speculative. Also, probably the most I've used my literary theory knowledge since I took literary theory my sophomore year in college.

JessicaBates I was so pleasantly surprised by this book! 8y

So unique and so intelligent. It reminded me a bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but it is also unlike anything I've read before.
