The Compass of Pleasure
The Compass of Pleasure: How Our Brains Make Fatty Foods, Orgasm, Exercise, Marijuana, Generosity, Vodka, Learning, and Gambling Feel So Good | David J. Linden
4 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
A leading brain scientist's look at the neurobiology of pleasure-and how pleasures can become addictions. Whether eating, taking drugs, engaging in sex, or doing good deeds, the pursuit of pleasure is a central drive of the human animal. In The Compass of Pleasure Johns Hopkins neuroscientist David J. Linden explains how pleasure affects us at the most fundamental level: in our brain. As he did in his award-winning book, The Accidental Mind, Linden combines cutting-edge science with entertaining anecdotes to illuminate the source of the behaviors that can lead us to ecstasy but that can easily become compulsive. Why are drugs like nicotine and heroin addictive while LSD is not? Why has the search for safe appetite suppressants been such a disappointment? The Compass of Pleasure concludes with a provocative consideration of pleasure in the future, when it may be possible to activate our pleasure circuits at will and in entirely novel patterns.

#FRIYAYINTRO

1. Watching the snow melt 🤗 Looking forward to getting our patio door replaced so we can sit outside out back. Private & a big backyard that we share with the other 2 tenants in the tri-plex we live in. We have our own shaded (if a bit leaky lol) shelter attached to our unit.

2. Introvert 100%

3. 9 & @Geenie on #10 & #11 currently

4. @Geenie

Andrew65 Thanks for the tag, I‘m also an introvert. (edited) 5y

Pickpick

1st to be completed (library loan audiobook) for @Clwojick #Readathon. I learned a lot from this book even if it‘s was a bit over my head lol. (I‘m also quite sure any knowledge I have gained will all but vanish from my brain shortly 🤦🏻‍♀️). So although it doesn‘t count for #MarchUnshelfing it was part of my TBR & it also counts towards the #LitsyAtoZ

Andrew65 This looks very tempting. 5y
DieAReader It very much was! I‘d be curious to know if there‘s an updated version as (2011 was a while ago) some (a lot?) of the research quoted may have been proven/disproven since this publication. There‘s no doubt new research as well. I‘m glad I read it even if it‘s outdated lol! Tickled my brain & had me thinking for sure. 5y
Clwojick Sounds interesting 🧐 5y
GHABI4ROSES You are powering, too❣️ 5y

These are my library loans goal for the #Readathon. The tagged (audio) book should be finished tomorrow while getting some house cleaning done. I will also be picking up Give Feet Apart (as it‘s been waiting for me since Thursday 😬). 1/3 posts

Clwojick Five Feet Apart was soooo good! 💙 5y
DieAReader I‘ve actually been hearing about it for a while now but thanks to a YouTube video (featuring scenes of the movie) that I listen to almost daily has piqued my curiosity. I really enjoy the song & have only paid 1/2 attention to the video lol. How odd am I? 🤣🤔 5y
CoverToCoverGirl You‘re going to love the Guardians.. sooooo good! 5y
Andrew65 Good luck 👍 5y

Getting some house cleaning done (very slowly 😬🙄) as I enjoy this audiobook. It‘s very interesting & Im fascinated if not a bit overwhelmed with info. Let‘s get this #ListyPartyofOne started!!

Andrew65 Sounds really interesting. 5y
DieAReader It‘s a bit dated now lol (published in 2011) but I‘m quite enjoying it. 5y
GHABI4ROSES I have a headache this morning from a couple things listed on that title, lol 5y
DieAReader Headache buddies 🤣😬. I had one too but it‘s cause I couldn‘t get to sleep. My brain tends to revolt when I‘m sleep deprived excessively. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 5y
