The Book of Margery Kempe | 
#OnThisDay (probably) in 1438, the earliest known autobiography written in English was completed. The Book of Margery Kempe details life as a Christian mystic, including moments of divine revelation and her "presence" at key Biblical events. There is (understandable) debate as to whether it can be called an autobiography, or if it is a confession of faith, but it remains significant as a glimpse into the mind of a medieval woman. #HistoryGetsLIT
Currently on the train to the Lake District getting some Margery Kempe reading done! I‘m taking an evening class on the book to ease me back into reading Middle English before my masters starts. I‘m really excited to do lots of reading in a really pretty location (hopefully!)
How the Margery Kempe book was discovered:
“Its whereabouts were unknown from around 1520 until the 1930s, when it was discovered in the cupboard of a country-house during a game of ping-pong. One of the players stepped on the ball and while searching for another, the The Book of Margery Kempe manuscript fell out of a cupboard.“

This 15th-century work is the earliest surviving #autobiography in English and was lost for centuries until a manuscript was found in 1934. Margery was a bit of a loon (she DID have 14 children 😏) but it's still historically fascinating stuff. #ReadJanuary #FolioSociety
