Coloring Outside the Lines | Roger Schank
2 posts | 1 read
So begins this controversial and enlightened book by Roger Schank, Ph.D., a world-renowned expert on teaming, who believes that every day of the school year our children are being failed by an academic system that does nothing to stir a lifelong passion for learning. In this lively, sometimes alarming book, Schank shatters the myths about how children learn and offers candid advice for parents who want to raise kids with gumption, ambition, creativity, inquisitiveness, and analytic and verbal proficiency.

Reading is a subversive act.
Let's put our money where our mouths are.
Join @BookishMarginalia and myself: Buy books that promote equality as well as those written by or about people are not afraid to speak out for what they believe in and promote them using the hashtag #ReadOutsideTheLines

BookishMarginalia Definitely. If you can, subscribe to the New York Times and ask others to do so as well. (Today POTUS tweeted that NYT is "FAKE NEWS"). We need to stand up for and support #freepress and journalism. ??? 8y
Nuwanda I'm with you! 8y
DogMomIrene If I may be so bold, I encourage people to subscribe to their local newspaper. My AZ Daily Star is thin...because they can't afford to hire enough reporters. I love the NYT and subscribe, but we also need reporter butts in the seats of every city hall and state legislative building. 8y

TrishB Have just ordered two Roxanne Gay books and the Blood at the Root book recommended by @TheNextBook . I so feel the need to try and do something. The picture of Trump and May has sickened me even more today..... 8y
Christine Really great idea. I am a huge library user and don't buy a ton of books, but this is inspiring me to change that in an intentional manner. 8y
Weaponxgirl I love this! I don't have a big book buying budget either, but I'm going to keep requesting that my library gets in these books too so that others in my situation or worse can read these books too. @Christine 8y
Ubookquitous Proud NYT subscriber. And yes, push libraries @Christine . Also, considering supporting long form journalism magazines such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and others. There is still great investigative journalism out there. Last, consider donating to the ACLU and others that will work to defend journalists and 1st Amendment rights. #fakenewsispropaganda (edited) 8y
Christine Loving this conversation - great ideas for taking action through our buying/borrowing/subscribing/donating! @BookishMarginalia @ocdIrene @TrishB @Weaponxgirl @Archetype67 8y
Christine @Weaponxgirl Yes, great thought re recommending...my urban California library systems are pretty good about buying diverse and/or social justice-oriented titles, but even they could do better, and recommending is all the more important in many systems I'm sure. 8y
Weaponxgirl @Christine same with mine but it's good to let them know it's both appreciated and keep on getting better! 8y
Christine @Weaponxgirl For sure! :) 8y
