Very cool book about a lost “City of Dreams” which is chronicled in the found audio tapes of an adventure journalist. Definitely draws you in and has me hooked.
After driving from Ohio to California in a little over 48 hours, I‘m so ready to read and enjoy this view for a few days before I move into my new apartment.
When you are moving across the country in a week and a half and you should be packing but all you want to do is read and enjoy beer at your favorite local brewery.
I‘ve been spending the weekend sick in bed. That leaves plenty of time for reading. I stumbled onto Found Audio at my local bookstore and immediately knew that I had to read it. I hadn‘t heard of Two Dollar Radio before, but flipping through their catalogue I want most of their books.
My book buying was a little out of control this month! #octoberhaul
To me, this would work better as three connected short stories. The framing of the found audio tapes, the disappearances, etc never quite did what I imagined it was supposed to. Excellent concept, though.
Just finished this thin Two Dollar Radio volume last night! A woman is given a series of tapes and told to transcribe them but not to share them with anyone, which of course she does -- and then she disappears. What follows is those transcriptions plus her notes about a journalist in the search for the "City of Dreams." SO. TRIPPY. It captured my attention from the first moment and this has to be one of my favorite reads all year. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Campbell is a good friend and a hell of a writer-- this is a mysterious, strange book full of little surprises. Definitely check it out
This one didn't work for me at all. Great concept: 3 mysterious tapes are brought to a sound expert for review. They are stolen and those associated with them seem to be missing. Poor execution: the contents of the tapes made little sense to me vis a vis the mystery and were mundane and meandering. What a bummer!
So excited to read with NJ Campbell tomorrow (Monday 9/18) at Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor Michigan! 7 pm. Still waiting to hug a Litten...
I was torn about how to rate this. I was reading it on break at work today and my coworker put up with my loud exclamations of "What the hell?". I got home and went to finish it and the exclamations continued. I still have no idea what to say about this, but I certainly have never read anything like it in a long time. There is no clear definition of what happened, what is happening, and why it happened. Twin Peaks-like.
My library recently started shelving YA audiobooks in with the print materials...not sure how I feel about this, since if I'm seeking audio it's specifically because I want to listen. Adult books are still separated. How do your libraries do this?
I like the creepy aspect of the book---odd recordings stolen from a museum that may or may not exist; mysterious disappearances of everyone named in the tapes. Those parts are great. The ending left much to be desired bc nothing is resolved. I feel like this is an early draft of a good mystery novel, but the other 2/3 of the book hasn't been written. If you want a quick, fun mystery, this is good. If you want a satisfying mystery, look elsewhere.
Confession: Sometimes I get ARCs in the mail, then sing ? ARC ARC ARC ARC ARC ? to the tune of Rihanna's "Work."
Seems appropriate for this one, especially, since it's about strange audios. I've had this ARC for 5 months, but I have a bad habit of not starting them until the last minute. ? It comes out in 3 weeks!
Also, le fiancé is reading with me too. He just prefers to play sportsball games on XBox and listen to audiobooks. ☺️
Meant to post this days ago OOPS.
Got some creepy weird exciting #bookmail today! Mysterious recordings from a place that might not exist & people who share the tapes vanishing?? Hi hello yes. @Xiankiefer describes it as "part Borges, part VanderMeer, part forgotten '70s psychedelic action movie." Found Audio by N.J. Campbell comes out in July!! Thanks, Two Dollar Radio, can't wait to start it.
Just got this ARC with a stellar cover and I'd be remiss I didn't photograph it next to my record/cassette player! I'm super excited about this one. It's another Two Dollar Radio gem. Like, every book they touch is pure good.
Also, I'm going to have to scan the cover and actually do that maze. I can't not. lol.
Anyway, go ahead and preorder Found Audio by NJ Campbell. Your bookshelf will thank you!
