My Fat Dad
My Fat Dad: A Memoir of Food, Love, and Family, with Recipes | Dawn Lerman
4 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
From the author of the New York Times Well Blog series, My Fat Dad Every story and every memory from my childhood is attached to food Dawn Lerman spent her childhood constantly hungry. She craved good food as her father, 450 pounds at his heaviest, pursued endless fad diets, from Atkins to Pritikin to all sorts of freeze-dried, saccharin-laced concoctions, and insisted the family do the sameeven though no one else was overweight. Dawns mother, on the other hand, could barely be bothered to eat a can of tuna over the sink. She was too busy ferrying her other daughter to acting auditions and scolding Dawn for cleaning the house (Whom are you trying to impress?). It was chaotic and lonely, but Dawn had someone she could turn to: her grandmother Beauty. Those days spent with Beauty, learning to cook, breathing in the scents of fresh dill or sharing the comfort of a warm pot of chicken soup, made it all bearable. Even after Dawns father took a prestigious ad job in New York City and moved the family away, Beauty would send a card from Chicago every weekwith a recipe, a shopping list, and a twenty-dollar bill. She continued to cultivate Dawns love of wholesome food, and ultimately taught her how to make her own way in the worldone recipe at a time. In My Fat Dad, Dawn reflects on her colorful family and culinary-centric upbringing, and how food shaped her connection to her family, her Jewish heritage, and herself. Humorous and compassionate, this memoir is an ode to the incomparable satisfaction that comes with feeding the ones you love.

This donut shop is right by the post office I went to today. . I'm sure Dawn's dad would approve of me stopping for a Meyer lemon cream filled donut and a café au lait as an afternoon treat after sending off my (slightly delayed) #LGP package. The book was great. And so was the #donut #bookandsnack #litsygoespostalOG @sprainedbrain

BooksForEmpathy YUM!!!! 8y
BooksForEmpathy I've been there once (back in August!) at a Chicago location. Is that where you are?? I know I should know this... #LGPOG fellow member 🙃. 8y
lynneamch My dad was a heavy guy. After a big family meal he would always say, "Only one thing wrong with eating. It spoiled my appetite." So, we say it now in his memory. ?❤ 8y

I'm really enjoying this memoir, especially since the author is about my age and is bringing back so many memories of things from my own childhood. There are some great recipes throughout, which close each chapter and relate to that chapter in some way, but this recipe for Salmon and Leeks....has no leeks 😳

Is there a football game about to start? I'm getting a pedicure (maintenance-it's a real thing!) and starting this one. I love Dawn Lerman's NYT pieces about her family so was very excited to learn about this book. #readingbowl

My current TBR stack less a couple downloaded on Kindle and some expected book mail. Some are holdovers from #24in48 when I went in different directions. 'My Fat Dad' is up next for review & recipe, but I really want to start 'In a Dark, Dark Wood.' 📚📚📚 #TBRTuesday #TBR
