What We Talk About When We Talk About God
What We Talk About When We Talk About God | Rob Bell
14 posts | 14 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
How God is described today strikes many as mean, primitive, backward, illogical, tribal, and at odds with the frontiers of science. At the same time, many intuitively feel a sense of reverence and awe in the world. Can we find a new way to talk about God? Pastor and New York Times bestselling author Rob Bell does here for God what he did for heaven and hell in Love Wins: he shows how traditional ideas have grown stale and dysfunctional and reveals a new path for how to return vitality and vibrancy to how we understand God. Bell reveals how we got stuck, why culture resists certain ways of talking about God, and how we can reconnect with the God who is with us, for us, and ahead of us, pulling us forward into a better futureand ready to help us live life to the fullest.

Yesterday I got recommendations for two podcasts that are both engaging but in quite different ways. #marvelousMay

Eye-opening. A reminder I desperately needed of God‘s everlasting presence in our lives and our world. When I start to forget that God is here now and always with us, I‘ll return to this book.

Sunraven When I was in my Victorians in Egypt phase, I read a book from the period where the author said something like this right at the beginning, and it was incredibly nice to see that there have always been people who find logic and faith compatible. ☺️ 5y
underthebelljar @Sunraven Yes! It‘s so refreshing to hear people who believe logic/reason and religion aren‘t mutually exclusive. And I especially love learning about people whose religion actually drives their love for science and vice versa! 5y
Sunraven It is always nice to encounter people who take the material the world gives them and do something positive with it instead of finding reasons to divide people from each other. 😁 5y
underthebelljar @Sunraven Yes it really is! 5y

“For many people in our world, the opposite of faith is doubt. The goal, then, is to eliminate doubt. But faith and doubt aren't opposites. Doubt is often a sign that your faith has a pulse, that it's alive and well and exploring and searching. Faith and doubt aren't opposites, they are, it turns out, excellent dance partners.”

For me, this was much needed. I LOVE all the science stuff at the beginning, it really spoke to me. When there's so much criticism and cynicism about God and religion, this was a breath of fresh air.

Not as good as What Is The Bible? It gets a little pseudoscienc-y at the end. #audiobook

On a Rob Bell kick, I guess. Or a spiritual kick if you will.

I don't know. It was good, but I feel like there was something missing. I can't quite put my finger on it though.
