Novel about a midwife, written by a midwife. Interesting story that reads like a biography.

i just cant finish. it is spunky and interesting but i cant handle the tone and the Plethora of f* words..It feels like trying too hard or something, Cant figure out what exactly is bugging me about it. for the right person, this book would be amazing, im not that person.
This book is a love letter to my family. It‘s about the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments –the ones we want to pretend never happened –are the very same moments that make us who we are today.
-- Jenny Lawson
"How ghastly for her, people actually thinking, with their brains, and right next door. Oh, the travesty of it all." werewolves, vampires and soulless, oh my!!
"For many people in our world, the opposite of faith is doubt. The goal, then, within this understanding, is to eliminate doubt. But faith and doubt aren't opposites. Doubt is often a sign that your faith has a pulse, that it's alive and well and exploring and searching. Faith and doubt aren't opposites, they are, it turns out, excellent dance partners."
I may have accidentally stayed up till 5 am to finish the book, but i have no regrets, the trees made me do it...An unexpectedly engaging book. You don't know what will happen next. Definitely recommend
Bill Brysons book that the movie is based on. Saw the movie first, and enjoyed it. '“That's the trouble with losing your mind; by the time it's gone, it's too late to get it back.”
"Our dragon doesn't eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell..."and so it begins! Uprooted and kumquats, the perfect pairing.
Such a poetic, powerful book! Loved it! I think the audiobook read by the author was sublime and soothing..definitely recommend!
a fantasy tale from India. A story of courage and friendship and enduring hardship with a magical twist.
wow, this is powerful work! Quote: For far too long we have been seduced into walking a path that did not lead us to ourselves. For far too long we have said yes when we wanted to say no. And for far too long we have said no when we desperately wanted to say yes. . . .
When we don't listen to our intuition, we abandon our souls. And we abandon our souls because we are afraid if we don't, others will abandon us."
why yes, i have been on a Bill Bryson kick but who can resist? this one is about seeing America through fresh eyes and i did laugh out loud and startle people, which is its own kind of recommendation :)
I'm turning into a fan of Bill Bryson! His books are clever and interesting, and though I'm late to the crazy for Bill Bryson 🎉 party, i have my dancing shoes on I'm ready to party! Never wanted to go to Australia before I read this!
an earthworm in Australia... discussed in this book...can grow up to 1 meter long and be 6 inches in diameter!
"But don't worry," she continued. "Most snakes don't want to hurt you. If you're out in the bush and a snake comes along, just stop dead and let it slide over your shoes."
This, I decided, was the least-likely-to-be-followed advice I have ever been given."
Charming romp through the British countryside. Funny and interesting. If you don't have a travel bug, you may get one:)
quotes:
"What a joy walking is. All the cares of life, all the hopeless, inept fuckwits that God has strewn along the Bill Bryson Highway of Life suddenly seem far away and harmless, and the world becomes tranquil and welcoming and good."
here is a new rule: If you are too stupid to spell “disappointed” even approximately correctly, you are not allowed to take part in public discourse at any level."
Bill Bryson
drawn in by the title and the cover shot, staying for the sarcastic prose!
my son made me do it...and i liked it! cant wait to get part 2!
Interesting, engaging, logixal flow to narrative. Good information!
very young adult, good for middle school aged. There is some kissing, so if you aren't enouraging that prehigh school, may want to pass.
Eye opening book into the business of food.
" to no longer see prayer as a magic trick that if i could just get right (do long enough, in the right way, with the right words and attitudes) would produce the goodies or goodness i long for. Sometimes God alone--His companionship, His perspectives, His love, His reminders --God alone becomes enough."
love this book! God is enough.
Small amount of adult content, but i really enjoyed it. i like books that make you curious about things. and this one made me curious about India and British history. Well developed, interesting characters.. I also enjoyed the excerpts from Jane Eyre, and the parallels.
tangental in its telling but fascinating in the information. i recommend it!
