The Lucky Ones
The Lucky Ones: A Novel | Julianne Pachico
A literary jigsaw puzzle of a debut novel set in Colombia during the peak of its decades-long conflict, and in New York City While her parents are away, a teenager finds herself home alone, with the household staff mysteriously gone, no phone connection, and news of an insurgency on the radioand then she hears a knock at the door. Her teacher, who has been kidnapped by guerrillas, recites Shakespeare in the jungle to a class of sticks, leaves, and stones while his captors watch his every move. Another classmate, who has fled Colombia for the clubs of New York, is unable to forget the life she left behind without the help of the little bags of powder she carries with her. Taking place over two decades, The Lucky Ones presents us with a world in which perpetrators are indistinguishable from saviors, the truth is elusive, and loved ones can disappear without a trace. A prismatic tale of a group of characters who emerge and recede throughout the novel and touch one anothers lives in ways even they cannot comprehend, The Lucky Ones captures the intensity of life in Colombia as paramilitaries, guerrillas, and drug traffickers tear the country apart. Combining vivid descriptions of life under siege with a hallucinatory feel that befits its violent world, The Lucky Ones introduces a truly original and exciting new voice in fiction. Advance praise for The Lucky Ones An expansive tapestry of a debut.Elle Riveting . . . A rare DNF for me. I really wanted to like this one, and expected to, but I was finding all of the various voices in this collection of connected short stores to be the same, and even as I was reading my mind kept drifting. Life‘s too short to stick with a book you don‘t feel engaged with.

Did someone say #Readathon? Not sure how much reading I will get done, as I‘m busy tomorrow, at work Monday, a funeral 😔 Tuesday and visiting my parents for the first time since Christmas for their 60th Wedding Anniversary for the rest of the week, but I will try and get through as much of the pictured books as possible.

4 out of 5: flashes of brilliance (that first chapter!) and beautiful prose, but it didn't come together enough for me and left me wanting more. But I will be first in line for her next book.

jhod This is being described as short stories in the UK... just been nominated for Sunday Times young writer of the year 6y

I initially had an extract from early in the book where a kidnapped American teacher keeps himself sane by teaching hamlet to the trees, leaves et al in the jungle. This however particularly struck me. This was a really good read, short stories that have connections involving life over 20 years in Colombia 1993-2013.

batsy This looks really intriguing! 7y

So good. So very good. I'm not usually a fan of the interconnected short stories thing, but it worked well in the context of depicting civil unrest and its aftermath over the course of two decades. I'm kinda surprised the rating on here is so low!

I really liked The Lucky Ones by Julianne Pacheco, but am not sure it's for everyone. It is actually a series of connected short stories about Colombians during some of the country's worst years, 1993-2013. These were eye opening and well, well worth reading.

This season's similarly titles books that also happen to create part of the rainbow. Publishing gets weird sometimes. 😂

Each of these linked stories illuminates a small part of Colombian life and the country's conflicts. They're sometimes surreal to reflect the unreality of the violence (one is narrated by a coke-addicted rabbit), but taken together you get a sense of what it's like to have lived in Colombia from the 90's through today. (This is as tropical as I could get for this photo.)
