The Company They Keep
The Company They Keep: C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien as Writers in Community | Diana Glyer
3 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
The creators of Narnia and Middle-earth, C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien were close friends and professional colleagues. They met frequently with a community of fellow writers at Oxford in the 1930s and 1940s, all sharing their works-in-progress. The group became known as the Inklings. This important study challenges the standard interpretation that Lewis, Tolkien, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield, and the other Inklings had little influence on one another's work, drawing on the latest research in composition studies and the sociology of the creative process. Diana Glyer invites readers into the heart of the group, examining diary entries and personal letters and carefully comparing the rough drafts of their manuscripts with their final, published work. Her analysis not only demonstrates the high level of mutual influence that characterized this writers group but also provides a lively and compelling picture of how writers and other creative artists challenge, correct, and encourage one another as they work together in community.

I'm just a few chapters in, but already loving Diana Glyer's The Company They Keep, an examination of the Inklings as a community of writers. The book is executed masterfully, well organized and filled to the brim with fascinating details. Glyer weaves a compelling tale of how these men influenced each other, and even delves into the nature of influence itself. Can't wait to keep reading!

emmekamalei @saresmoore The Fellowship is a wonderful book too! I'd say it's a little more "sparkling" in its style, while Glyer is more analytical. I'd highly recommend both works. ? 7y

Just finished my first book for the #24in48 readathon. This was a really neat look at the Inklings and how simply being a community as they were meant that their work was different than it would have been without the Inklings. It also gave more information about the individual members of this incredible group.

My #24in48 pile is a bit deceptive since so much is in e-book form this time around. Goal 1: finish up The Company They Keep, a really neat scholarly look at how the Inklings influenced one another.
