Phantom Limbs
Phantom Limbs | Paula Garner
How do you move on from an irreplaceable loss? In a poignant debut, a sixteen-year-old boy must learn to swim against an undercurrent of grief or be swept away by it. Otis and Meg were inseparable until her family abruptly moved away after the terrible accident that left Otis s little brother dead and both of their families changed forever. Since then, it s been three years of radio silence, during which time Otis has become the unlikely protege of eighteen-year-old Dara part drill sergeant, part friend who s hell-bent on transforming Otis into the Olympic swimmer she can no longer be. But when Otis learns that Meg is coming back to town, he must face some difficult truths about the girl he s never forgotten and the brother he s never stopped grieving. As it becomes achingly clear that he and Meg are not the same people they were, Otis must decide what to hold on to and what to leave behind. Quietly affecting, this compulsively readable debut novel captures all the confusion, heartbreak, and fragile hope of three teens struggling to accept profound absences in their lives."

I made it my new year's resolution to read more, but this has meant that I haven't posted on Litsy in ages!

This was my 35th book of 2019 and it was too incredible to go without giving it a mention.

It is a young adult novel, but I think that anyone will enjoy it! It was the sort of book that, although it wasn't necessarily sad, it left a lump in my throat for the entire thing.

It's the best book I have read in a while! :)

This book will break your heart into a million pieces, glue them back together, and then throw it on the floor again and laugh in your face. I couldn‘t put it down, and I found myself crying along with Otis and worrying along with Meg. Raw and honest, this book was a total pick for me.

So far, it‘s starting out very slow, but it‘s still a pleasant read.

Slow start and it took me a while to really settle into the story, but once I did - pages flew. A view into the complex mire of grief, loss, love and self identity, that is woven so truthfully that the character's pain is real. The book ended so well that it immediately gave it an extra half star from a solid four star read.

this book was beautiful in so many ways. it belongs in the universe of 'we are all made of molecules' and 'i'll give you the sun'- the characters were well written, diverse, and a little heartbreaking. definitely something i would read again.

Didn't really like the main characters, I'd have much rather had Dara's story. Didn't like the constant sex talk, how many times did he have to describe someone's butt or boobs? I didn't really connect with the characters on the page, and the whole losing someone is like a phantom limb?... I don't know, maybe I missed something...

Been out overseas for a while, but it's being released in Australia in June. Enjoying this heartfelt, horny boy's narration. He seems genuine and real.

So good. Seriously. Loss and life and what it means to keep living and loving as a real, wounded, broken, healing person.

Really, really liking this book. Great look inside the psyche after loss, and also inside the relationships and friendships between/among teenagers and teens and parents. Also the slow release of info about the tragedy before the book is killing me but so good.

And now, this one that I've been hearing so much about! How do we move on after loss? It's a question so many of us ask. We'll see what this book and these characters have to say.

MrBook I've seen this book popping up a lot. Looking forward to your thoughts. 8y

Finished this on one sitting last night. The male POV is so well done, and I'd highly recommend it for those who appreciate books that explore the way love and loss can resonate for a lifetime. Fantastic debut, out this September!

LianneB I've heard great things! 9y
misswendyd @hwheaties @LianneB I really enjoyed it! I'd heard good things too, but mostly from other debut authors, so you never really know. But the writing is excellent, and the relationships (not just romantic, but also friendships, adult neighbor/teen, siblings, etc) are 👍🏻. 9y
