Everything about this book makes me furious, including this incredibly battered library copy, and I'm not finishing it. Stop calling it adult Harry Potter. It's not. 😛 #bye

HotMessJess Ok, do tell! I wanted to read because my husband liked the TV show so much! 7y
jesslovestype @HotMessJess I've heard good things about the TV show! The MC is seriously unlikeable (nice guy syndrome for sure). The writing is all tell-don't-show. The magic system is really poorly defined. And it's zooming through the schooling process which is the only thing I want to read about if this is actually gonna be adult HP. 7y
HotMessJess My husband really enjoyed the series. I saw a few episodes and it's not bad, but I have serious ADHD and can't focus on a show to save my life (with the exceptions of Parks and Rec, American Horror Story, OITNB and Veep). If a book is being touted with adult HP, IT BETTA BE ADULT HP! 7y

Damn shame this gorgoues cover didn't keep me more interested in this story, especially since it seemed so unique for contemporary YA. Alas, nothing gets me insta-bored more quickly than insta-love and an idiotic protagonist I really can't get behind. 🌋 #ya #yalit

Another case of beautiful, lyric prose separating me from the main character, who was the most boring of all the Devonairre Street girls. The good: a gorgeous portrayal of female friendship and grief and a fascinating alternate universe America (and that cover 😍). The bad: I wanted to spend more time with the world than inside Lorna's selfish, confused and repetitive inner monologue. 🌾🍋 #ya #yalit

I read this in under a day. It made me desperately misty-eyed. It wasn't perfect, but it's Important™ and was delightfully hopeful. Amanda was somewhat universally relatable, but artsy side-kick Bee and her arc was incredibly nuanced. Thankfully the plot was about more than the reveal of Amanda's secret—which was handled so uniquely and well that I didn't see it coming ten thousand miles out. 😇 #ya #yalit #lgbtq (& yes, a trans cover model!)

This book had such potential! Interdimensional travel! And Gray just piddles it away in a boring love triangle and half-baked physics with glaring plotholes explained away cause Marguerite 'doesn't get science.' And it was boring so boring, omg, I can't imagine picking up the next one. 👾#ya #yalit

I won't have enough characters to talk about how much I #LovetoHate this novel. Suffice it to say that it's not a love story, it's losely disguised sex-ed propaganda 40 years out of date. Katherine is a cardboard cut-out who doesn't have any characterization other than the fact that she hates raisins and hot dogs and Michael is an unrelenting horndog who calls his penis Ralph. Nothing about this book is okay. #BookLove17 @LibrarianRyan

Haha, uh, hi. I really didn't like this one. Ari was unbearable. His narration read like Hemingway. His internalized homophobia and repressed emotional development was trying, and the book was pretty plotless (which I generally despise).
Like Perks of Being a Wallflower, I think I read this too old. It lacked that transcendent, beyond-YA quality all of my favorite YAs share. And it is NOTHING like I'll Give You the Sun, tyvm. 😶 #ya #yalit #sorry

I own all three, cause they're gorgeous, but I #DNF ed about halfway through Authority. I was beginning to suspect I wouldn't get an answer to a single question and, as far as I'm concerned, a mystery is only as good as the explanation. Plus all those flashbacks to how it felt to be watching Lost... Anyone finish the trilogy? Was it worth it? 👽🌿 #readJanuary

Yournewfriendsams Annihilation reminded me of the tv show, Lost. So much ambiguity, so many 'deep' mysteries. I didn't invest in the rest of the series 😕 7y
jesslovestype @Yournewfriendsams It's so much like Lost, that's why I gave up. 7y
[DELETED] 586715006 The first book reminded me of the first season of Lost, so I was nervous that there would be no answers going into Authority. Like you, I was ready to quit there when it only got more complicated. I stuck through to the end and it wasn't worth it. Vandermeer is much more enamored with confusing you and hiding answers than he is with providing any resolution. It's infuriating. 7y
jesslovestype @SupposedlyFun Looks like they're gonna be pretty bookshelf decorations forever, then. 😀 7y
jesslovestype @SupposedlyFun It just seems like it takes so much less talent to pull of a book that just perpetually confuses you. There should be another reason to keep me reading! 7y

Suffer Love is perfectly readable, if somewhat lackluster. The central mystery is easy to figure out, so you just find yourself screaming at Sam to tell her already through most of the novel.
