A Woman's Work | Harriet Harman

The first time the story of women's progressive politics over the past thirty years has been told - by someone at the forefront of the movement Why does the political representation of women matter? And which hurdles - personal, political and societal - have been faced, fought and sometimes overcome in the past thirty years? From campaigning with small children to increasing the number of women in Parliament, bringing women's issues to the heart of the Labour Party and tackling a parliamentary culture with no consideration for family life, this frank, inspiring and politically charged book is a crucial account of the progress (and occasional setbacks) made in fighting to change the Labour Party, UK politics and the way the country has been governed since the 1970s.

Listening to Michelle Obama‘s memoir has reminded me of Harriet Harman‘s. I read this when it first came out a few years ago but I think about it often. It‘s incredible hearing her journey, starting out as only a handful of women in government, she campaigned for an equality bill and working mothers and women of sexual violence. It‘s amazing to think what current female MPs have gone through to get to government so they can help the rest of us.

If you are interested in politics and/or equality, read this. Not your average political memoir.

It's 💯 years today since the first women in the UK got the vote. And the radio is full of discussion about women participating in politics along with the sexism and abuse that women MPs still face.

From bottom left.
Nancy Astor, the first woman MP to take her place in parliament
Harriet Harman. I've just discovered I want to read this one!
Caroline Lucas, who talks about how just plain odd being an MP is if you're not in the old boys network.

rockpools And Jess Philips ' you might already know me as that gobby MP who has a tendency to shout about the stuff I care about. Because I'm a woman with a cause, I have been called a feminazi witch and a murderer and threatened with rape. The Internet attracts a classy crowd' 7y

TrishB Great post 👍🏻 as a reminder of where we are - there have been 489 female MPs since 1918 - there are 442 male MPs in the current parliament....we‘re not there yet. The online abuse stuff is just horrific. 7y

Words cannot describe how much I loved this book. I found it invigorating and inspiring, it brought me to tears more than once. Harman wrote her memoir conscious that the female perspective of politics was doomed to be lost forever. She unapologetically names and shames the sexism she's faced and gives voice to the experiences of many 💪 it was an honour to meet her last week #feminism #harrietharman #politics #womensrights #women #sexism

Reading A Woman's Work has given me such a strong sense of sisterhood and a desire to, even if only in small ways, help work to end the inequalities Harman refers to #harrietharman #politics #women #feminism #sisterhood #sexism #patriarchy

In the final pages of the epilogue of her book, Harriet Harman offers ten pieces of advice from her experience, in my opinion these ought to be compulsory reading, so much wisdom. #harrietharman #labour #votelabour #britishpolitics #politics #feminism #patriarchy #sexism #sisterhood

Harriet Harman gives an engaging and shocking account of her journey through British politics as a woman! I had never before considered how hard it must have been starting out being one of 7 women MPs. The opposition and criticisms she received and yet pushed forward working to improve conditions for women across the country and in politics is amazing! And so terrific to see how it's changed and what more needs to be done! 📚💗

I love that Harman takes no prisoners and openly exposes those who've wronged her #harrietharman #politics #labourparty #sexism #feminism #law
Might have got a bit carried away with stickers on this one.

Great view on my walk today with a good audiobook! Almost at the end of this one and I've learnt so much about UK politics and what the women MPs had to go through and I didn't even realise!
Also loving being back in the countryside for a bit! 🏞💛

If any of you want to read a memoir about a strong woman who has made great changes for women (in Europe, not the US), this one sounds amazing! Listen to the podcast with an interview with the author. I'll be looking for it. #TryPod
