The Sun Sword
The Sun Sword: The Sun Sword #6 | Michelle West
14 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Now, at last the Sun Sword has been delivered into the hands of its rightful owner, and the armies of the Dominion and the Empire are about to rendezvous for their final battle. But no one can know how the Lord of Night's daughter Kiriel will change both the nature and the course of the war. And no one can foresee whether mortals or the demon Kialli will prove the final victors.

Pickpick

You don't want to read THE SUN SWORD unless you've read the rest of the series. Go back to at least THE BROKEN CROWN. For best results, pick up HUNTER'S OATH instead.

Then come find me so we can gush about Michelle West's ability to illuminate her characters' true selves though telling interactions; her intense, multilayered worldbuilding; the big damned SWEEP of it all.

Maybe you, like me, will find her fight scenes and her magic less ⬇️

xicanti compelling, but I truly believe you'll find so much to love that you'll overlook the less wonderful bits. You especially want West on your wishlist if you're an epic fantasy reader who longs for a lengthy series from a non-white, non-American perspective; she's a Canadian of Japanese descent. 6y

Gonna finish THE SUN SWORD before I do anything else. It's been such a journey!

Also gonna finish this beer, which cost me $1.56 and tastes like it was at least $1.75.

I still haven't won a car.

Hell, I still haven't won so much as a donut.

BOOOOOOOO.

At least my Timmies reading session took me within 30 pages of THE SUN SWORD's end. That's sort of like a win? Even if I can't eat it or sell it to someone who wants a Jeep to drive, not just so they can tell everyone they won a car on Roll Up The Rim?

140 pages left. To be honest, I'm ready to take a couple days off from it again. I'm into the big battle West's been building up to for a million pages, and y'all know I'm not nearly as fond of her battle scenes as her interpersonal stuff. There are flashes of that here, but there's also a lot of fighting and abstract magic. Sadness.

Still, I'll plough on through in the hopes the battle ends soon and there's a long, charactery epilogue.

They aren't quite close enough together for an effective photo, but I had to share my reading buddies with y'all nonetheless. They're too cute to keep to myself.

I'm now in the homestretch with this 960-page tome. If the Book Gods are kind, I SHOULD manage to finish it by the end of February.

britt_brooke So cute!! 💚🐾 6y
xicanti @britt_brooke I can't get over the two of them together. I end up squealing in pure delight from all the cute. 6y

#weekendreads time.

1. Tagged for primary fiction, plus HOMES by Abu Bakr Al Rabeeah and Winnie Yeung for nonfiction, WITCHMARK by C.L. Polk on audio, and a big ol' stack of GIANT DAYS for comics.

2. Paperback or ebook.

3. I tapped out of JANE EYRE on page 126 in grade 12, but I did go back and read it in its entirety a few years ago. Adult Me liked it way more than 16-year-old Me was capable of, so I feel I did good.

readordierachel My mom handed me Jane Eyre when I was in junior high and I couldn't do it either. Didn't pick it up again til college. Now I love it. 6y

I'm diving back into THE SUN SWORD with a little help from wee Duffy. Casey's sprawled out on the couch beside us.

Tea break with my latest hundred pages of THE SUN SWORD. I've hit a good rhythm with it now so I might read it straight through from here. I'll see how I feel once I finish this segment.

Windchill's -35 and there's giant snow drifts everywhere with more falling by the minute, so we're calling this a snow day. Gonna stay in bed as long as possible. #caseyplusbooks

AlaMich The expression on his poor little face! The cone of shame! 🐶😔 6y
xicanti @AlaMich he's got a much comfier inflatable collar he wears for a bit in the daytime, but he can get around it if he wiggles in just the right way so he's confined to the cone of shame most of the time. Thankfully it's just for a few more days! 6y

I didn't fancy the Superb Owl party at my house, so I went to see Mary Poppins (cute, but probably not memorable) then did the #LitsyPartyOfOne thing at McDonald's with a free coffee and a cheap pie.

THE SUN SWORD is one of my must-reads for February. I've put it off for years because it's 960 pages, but now I'm determined to finish it as my in-between book. Every time I finish something else, I'll read another 100 pages of it.

alisiakae I‘m not a fan of Super Bowl parties, but I‘ll take Superb Owl parties any day! 😂😂 6y
xicanti @4thhouseontheleft if they'd actually invited an owl, I'd have been all in! 6y
silentrequiem I'd be totally down for a Superb Owl party! 6y

New month, new planner spread featuring my three February must-reads and La TBR's current count. I'd love to reduce it to 330 by March 1st.

Boom. I finished my chunksters checklist--everything on La TBR that's got 450(ish) pages or more--and now I'm done with this bullet journal setup. My wee notebook's an awful lot fatter after all the decorative stuff I added to it today.

GrilledCheeseSamurai I. Friggen. Love. The Dragonbone Chair. The whole series, actually. Like...you know the way people love LOTR's? That's me with the Memory Sorrow and Thorn books! ❤️ 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Also, book journaling rocks! 🤘👍 6y

AceOnRoam I need to get me some glitter!!! 6y
xicanti @GrilledCheeseSamurai I read and loved the series about twenty years ago, and I bought these copies for a planned reread at least ten years ago. It's gonna happen in 2019! For real this time! 6y
xicanti @Texreader thank you! 6y
xicanti @AceOnRoam glitter is the BEST. Especially glitter in tape form, since it doesn't crumble off and stick everywhere. 6y
AceOnRoam @xicanti great idea, thanks for the tip 😊 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Tad Williams, bro. Dude loves that page count. I made a list of my short books, but a list of my unread chunksters might depress me. I know I‘ve got Freedom & Necessity on my shelf. 6y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've been meaning to read FREEDOM & NECESSITY for like fifteen years, but I keep balking because it's 442 hardcover pages of minuscule type. 6y

Sick day survival pile. I've got one of those colds where your nose turns into a tap and your throat feels like someone lined it with fabric and you think you MIGHT have a fever but you're too muddled to say for sure. Maybe you're shivering because the furnace is about to come on. Maybe.

So I'm gonna read a bunch and maybe watch some VICTORIA, with cat cuddles thrown in when Mr Gray feels like it.

AlaMich I hope you feel better soon! I almost never get sick but back in December I had the sore throat from hell. Not fun!! 7y
VanChocStrawberry Feel better! 7y

This is a stupid thing to complain about but I'm about to finish sun sword and then house war on my nook app and this is the tiniest font available. I wish it was smaller D:
